OPELOUSAS - The Opelousas Catholic Lady Viking soccer team and their race toward school history ended with a 4-0 loss to the Academy of the Sacred Heart Cardinals of New Orleans. The Cardinals just had too much fire power for the Lady Vikings to stop.
The match was played almost entirely on the Vikings end of the field as Viking goal keeper Alaina Chachere stopped shot after shot before the Cardinals could get a goal. At the 15-minute mark of the first half, Academy of the Sacred Heart's Sara Fogelman headed the Cardinals first goal.
Jessica Talbot was credited with the assist off the corner kick and the Lady Vikings trailed 1-0.
ASH's second goal of the match came with less than two minutes to go in the first half.
This time, Meg Casey netted a header off a corner kick from Sara Fogelman. OC went into the half time break trailing 2-0.
In early moments of the second half, the OC goal keeper saw more shots on goal and managed to make a few stops. One stop by Chachere was a diving save of a shot by ASH's Lindsay Brower at the 2 minute mark of the second half.
The Cardinals could not manage another goal until the 25 minute mark of the second half. Meg Casey this time found the back of the net with a scoring shot from the left center of the Viking goal. Casey's solo goal put the Academy of the Sacred Heart up 3-0.
The Lady Vikings had an excellent scoring opportunity at the 30 minute mark. OC's Hillary Tuttle was fouled in the box and was granted a penalty kick.
Tuttle's penalty kick was stopped by the Cardinal goal keeper Brittany Maywell.
The final goal of the game was scored by Nina Waring on a bump in goal via an assist by Meredith Schiro. Waring's goal put the final score of 4-0 in place.
With the win Academy of the Sacred Heart advances to the semi finals of Division III to face the winner of the Catholic High of Pointe Coupee and Catholic High of New Iberia match.
Opelousas Catholic head coach Chuck Soileau noted after the match: "We lost on corner kicks today. We knew they had two tall girls who executed the corner kicks very well and they executed them to perfection."
"I am not disappointed with the effort. I am only disappointed that we do not have another game. Our girls fought hard for 80 minutes against the team that came in second in the state last year, and this team just might win it all this year."
Soileau also said, "I am sorry for our lone senior on the team, Linda Brownlee. She has been a great leader and we will miss her next year."
The Lady Vikings end the season with a 17-8-1 record and an appearance in the quarter finals of the state soccer playoffs.
