I don't know if it is on the table or not but I was told by someone who should know that there is a proposal being brought up at the meetings in Jan. to make it illegal for any high school coach to also be a club coach? Not too sure of the details but this would seem to be aimed at Soccer and volleyball. I don't see why they want to single out these sports, since most high school baseball coaches also manage the American Legion team that their kids play on basically giving him an extra season each summer with his complete team. If anyone knows about this please fill me in. Thanks

my understanding is that the proposal is to make it more difficult for athletes to transfer in order to follow their club coach to another school

I take it that this happens a lot?

Also, why do they want to prevent the movement of players? If a kid wants to change schools to play soccer for another coach (be it their club coach or not), why should LHSAA prevent it? Does that cause a problem for anyone, other then the coach for the high school team where the player would have gone? Not that I am for or against it, I am just asking the question.
And, no, I am not a high school and club coach. I do not have a interest in this one way or another.

I haven’t heard about this but if it does happen it will only take quality, certified coaches away from high school and put history/biology teachers on the sidelines, like it used to be. I would think LHSAA would want to take steps forwards not backward, but it would not surprise me. The reasons offered so far are not good enough. The coaches I know would prefer club over HS because club offers a year-round income (with the ability to coach more than just one team, unlike HS which is a 2-3 month deal that pays peanuts.

I don't know if this applies, but this is what I found on the business agenda for the January LHSAA convention:
IV. ITEMS INTRODUCED TO ENTIRE ASSOCIATION PERTAINING TO THE BYLAWS OF THE LHSAA THAT SHALL BE VOTED ON IF THE AUTHOR(S) IS/ARE PRESENT. 11. Amend Article 2-Recruiting, by creating Rule 2.1.3, Page B-31 of the 2007-08 LHSAA By-Laws to be worded in the following manner: 2.1.3 A student transferring from one member school to another shall be ruled ineligible for one calendar year from the date of enrollment because of “undue influence” if: 2.1.3.1 It is determined that a coach, including CECP certified, of the receiving school coached an out-of-school team on which the athlete played: or 2.1.3.2 It is determined the coach, including CECP certified, at the receiving school acted as a private athletic instructor for the transferring athlete, regardless of whether the coach was paid for his/her services and/or expertise; or 2.1.3.3 It is determined the transferring student played on an out-of-school team made up of a simple majority of students from the receiving school; or 2.1.3.4 A student transfers to a new school within one calendar year of the relocation of his/her coach, including CECP certified, to that school. 2.1.3.5 Article 2.1.3, 2.1.3.1, 2.1.3.2, 2.1.3.3 and 2.1.3.4 shall be enforced even in the event the student made a bona fide move into the receiving school’s attendance zone. Executive Committee
Didn't really see anything else regarding the prohibition of club coaches in regards to volleyball and soccer. Hope it helps everyone's position.
I believe coachray had correctly addressed what the proposition is about in his post above.

Thanks Tigertail, that's what I was looking for! I had heard about this from a high school coach who coaches club volleyball. He didn't know what was in the proposal only what he was told by a principal.
Good luck this week with Desty!

Eventually if this keeps going on then i can see many players just playing club soccer and not playing high school soccer at all. The LHSAA just keep alienating the player from their club coaches. I have spoke with several players from other States and they don't even play High School Soccer anymore. Some have even signed contracts with their clubs which don't allow them to play High School. A lot of the best college recruiting tournaments are in the winter months and we can't attend thanks to the LHSAA and then you have the so called High School Showcase Tournaments. Did anyone see a College Coach at the St. Louis Showcase!! They just don't go to the High School Tournaments. I wish the LHSAA would allow us to play for our clubs this time of year like most other States so we don't miss out on the opportunity to go to these great tournaments and get seen.

If this would ever pass, there would be many coaching positions available for all those parents that think they could do a better job. In the Lafayette area Comeaux, Acadiana and Lafayette High are all coached/trained by premiere trainers. STM has a coach that is a former premiere coach / trainer. If they want these coaches gone, lafutbolplaya07 is correct, players will not play high school soccer. By the way, there was a College Coach at the tournament. The coach from University of Louisiana - Lafayette and he was trying to get a roster of all the teams so he could identify the players on the field. He told me this is the only time he has a chance to see high school soccer players. He does most of his recruiting by watching showcase tournaments, because of the season conflicts. We had to ask who this player and that player was in order for him to get any information at all. I know for the Lafayette High tournament December 27-30, (somewher in there) they are inviting college coaches to come out and watch. I know they are in the process of putting together rosters for them if the teams get them in on time. So any coaches out there who may be interested in scouting som good quality players we'll see you weekend after next.
