I too question why the Newman Ursuline game did not go into OT. One of the two referee's, both of whom let the aggressive play get out of hand, ultimately leading to injuries, made it a point to verbalize, before the start of the game, that there would be no overtime in this game. This format was agreed upon by the Coaches in this District, at the pre-season planning meeting. 3 pts for a win 1 point for a tie, and 0 pts for a loss Goals for, or against count up to 3. Tie-breaks: Overall Win-Loss record, Goals for, Goals against (up to 3), etc.........

I saw the Ursuline - Newman game and believe the bold-faced comment about "out of hand" play is inaccurate and unwarranted.

According to the LHSAA rules in the soccer by-laws, all district contests must have a winner. Ties are not permitted by LHSAA in soccer for district contests, and they haven't been for some time now.
Any district agreement to the contrary is against LHSAA rules. Hopefully none of the other matches in district will end like this, lest the LHSAA have to get involved as it did some years ago when the referees let Dominican and Chapelle end a match in a tie and the teams had to come back on the last day of the regular season to play the overtime that they should have played during the district match.

Jan. 4 Vandebilt beat district opponent Helen Cox
Jan.5 Vandebilt 7 ED White 2
From Houma Paper: VANDEBILT CATHOLIC 7, E.D. WHITE CATHOLIC 2 (GIRLS)
At Vandebilt, after opening the game with a goal by Cayla Chatman for an early 1-0 Lady Terriers’ lead, EDW’s Mindi Giroir responded with a goal of her own to tie the score at 1.
From that point on, it was all Vandebilt as Chatman added two more goals along with two goals each from Allyson Voisin and Jordan Picou. Giroir added her second goal for the Lady Cardinals in the second period. With the win the Terriers improved to 12-7. The Lady Cardinals dropped to 5-6-1 with the loss.

I SEE... I guess there will be 2 Sudden Death extra time periods, and Penalty kicks if needed to decide the winner of this match, in the near future!18.10 TIE-BREAKER CRITERIA 18.10.1 REGULAR SEASON (Non-district) 18.10.1.1 Opposing coaches shall mutually agree prior to the start of the contest if they wish to use the tie breaker. If one coach does not agree, the tie-breaker rule shall not be used, and the contest shall end in a tie. 18.10.1.2 If a non-district match ends in a tie and both coaches agreed prior to the match to play overtime, a 10-minute overtime period shall be played. If the match is still tied, a second 10- minute overtime period shall be played; if the match is still tied, the match will go to penalty kicks (shootout) until a winner is determined. 18.10.2 REGULAR SEASON (District) 18.10.2.1 The tie-breaker rule shall be used for all district contests. 18.10.2.2 If a district match ends in a tie, a 10-minute overtime period shall be played. If the match is still tied, a second 10-minute overtime period shall be played; if the match is still tied, the match will go to penalty kicks (shootout) until a winner is determined.

A clarification to the Tie-Breaker Criteria for district matches, if the score is tied at the end of regulation then a 10-minute overtime period is played. But, I do believe that the overtime period is played to completion, it is not sudden death scoring. If one team is winning at the end of the first overtime, then the game is complete.
If the game is still tied after the first 10-minute overtime then they would play the second. And then PKs if necessary.

RE: Ursuline and Newman: Evidently, there WILL be 1 or 2 OT periods and maybe PKs, but no date has yet been set, as far as I know.
It is "surprising" that the coaches who made the previous agreemet to allow ties should have done so in obvious ignorance of LHSAA rules.

The overtime periods are not sudden death. As Bruce noted in his post, a 10-minute overtime period must be played. If there is no winner at the end of the 10-minute overtime period, then a second 10-minute overtime period is played before going to penalty kicks.
Sudden death only comes into play in the playoffs after the twenty-minute overtime period.
