First and foremost -- mucho congratules to Dominican for a hard fought 1-0 victory. Best of luck in the semi's against STM. And now on to the game analysis.
Very interesting game. Line-up shifts made for some skewed observations. With 8 minutes left, SJA coach brought all state defender[/i] Megan Aultman up to the midfield to try and create some opportunities, which she did -- but this left the back line exposed, resulting in a couple of opportunities for Dominican to ice the game, which they failed to do.
Dominican's only score came in the 12th minute on a gorgeous cross from the left side. SJA failed to mark the back side forward, who had an easy tap in for the game's only goal.
Dominican then pulled back on defense for the rest of the game. SJA accepted the challenge, and really controlled the rest of the game. Possession in the 1st half was even. Possession in the 2nd half was 60-40 SJA. SJA out shot the visitors 10-7. Both goalies had 4 saves.
SJA was far more aggressive and won most of the balls in the 2nd half, but Dominican's D for the most part remained intact. SJA played a bit more vertical than perhaps they should have, but against an aggressive D, sometimes you try and get the ball where you see the first teammate.
Overall, I could not be more proud of the Red Dawgs. As of last night, the total cumulative predicted score of this match on this site was Dominican 18 SJA 2. I call on Dominican parents to attest whether their hearts were in their throats during the last 15 minutes.
SJA loses 3 fabulous seniors in Morgan Broussard, Ellen Cleland, and Lauren Hurdle -- 3 young ladies who will make their marks on this world -- of that I can attest. SJA returns at least 8 key juniors who will serve as the cornerstone of something special -- should they dare to dream. This team will be a force with which to reckon next year.
Good luck, Dominican.
