During a recent game several players slid tackled from behind taking the other player to the ground. After the match a parent asked the ref if coming from behind was legal, his response I've never read where it wasn't.
Is it legal to slide tackle from behind?

After the match a parent asked the ref if coming from behind was legal, his response I've never read where it wasn't. Is it legal to slide tackle from behind? U-19 game... Yes it is illegal provided it is clean, no where in the law book it states that if a player comes from behind, its a foul. It is just very unlikely that someone can do it cleanly. However, there are some players who have done very well of mastering and timing a behind the tackle with cleanly getting the ball. There are also stricter penalties for not doing it successfully as well. But why should a player be restricted from an angle if he can successfully and cleanly get the ball? And if all tackles are from behind, what classifies it as behind? the side it partically behind, should that be a foul?

Here we go with the old myth that any tackle from behind is a red card/send off. A tackle from behind MAY be a send off if it "endangers the safety of the player". This is to be considered serious foul play. A tackle from ANY direction can be serious foul play if it meets that requirement, not just from behind. This statement is in the Laws of the Game, IFAB Decision 4 and in the advice to referees. No where in the Laws does it say a tackle from behind is a send off. In the end, you could have a tackle from the front/side, Or back that is a caution and not a send off. In the end..."in the opinion of the referee" is the question to be asked.
Several years ago, there was an emphasis on cracking down on these tackles which can be very dangerous and where the myth came from. Most of it came from TV announcers who didnt have a clue what FIFA had really said.

Thanks for the clarification, it was in a U-14 game not U-19 and I don't think most of those boys have the skill to go after just ball from the back-not the side. I didn't necessarily think it deserved a red card but I thought a warning might have been it order.
