Referees, why do referee? I think it is time we let everyone else knows why we get out there and get yelled at the way we do. I'll let a few people answer before I give my reasons.

It's a trial of one's management skills. In order to successfully control a match, one must know how players behave in different situations ahead of time so as to prevent the match from getting out of hand and to keep the game flowing. When this is achieved, the game is so beautiful to watch and great to be a part of. Many other things keep me reffing, but this is what stands out foremost in my mind.

I do it because it is a true test of patience. It is fun and enjoyable, but can be stressful and aggravating. I enjoy watching players at the U-10 level advance to the high school level. I also like the experience gained through the management of a soccer game. It helps in many other careers as well as other sporting events. I like the game and believe that is is not as popular as it should be because of other sports that dominate in America. Overall, the sport, and for the most part the people, keep me wanting to continue to officiate. At the end of each game, you know that you have accomplished something that helps keep the great game of soccer.

Ok. My turn. To be honest, I started out just to stay in the game after playing in college, and too make a little extra money.
Now though, after doing it a few years (10), my reasons have changed. I still do it for the love of the game, but I realize that people did it so I can play. So now my main reason for doing it is so that other kids can play the greatest game on earth.
I just hope that there are enough young people coming up so that I can watch my daughter play as she grows up.
