For those who have seen the eduardo leg break incident, is the correct form to check on in the status of the player or to show the red card straight away?
I would have thought that the safety of the player was the paramount concern; cards, if required, could be shown later (although, granted, that could be seen to be based on the severity of the injury, and not on the legality of the challenge).

It was soooo ugly, it's kinda hard to know exactly what I'd do. I guess, after calling for the board, I'd be sick and then show the red....

You can do what ever you want. I can promise you he was getting a red no matter if he broke his leg or not.

agreed i feel awful for Eduardo. Today was his birthday. I would hate to celebrate it with a compound fracture and dislocated ankle

When to show the red? I don't know if there is a black/white answer. Depends on so many issues. If there is any likelihood of retaliation against that player, do it quick and let everyone know. Yes it can be issued later. In that particular case, there is no doubt that players were calling for medical attention immediately. The player was going to get attention PDQ.
More importantly, for referees, this type of cleats up, over the ball tackle is fairly common. I see it almost every weekend. Fortunately, many players "jump" over it or avoid it. But few referees deal with it. This type of tackle clearly endangers the safety of the players. And when it makes contact, it can often be with ugly results.....as we saw.

my son, a high school player, stated that under high school rules, eduardo would have had to have his shin guards lower. It looks like the break was just at the bottom end of his shin guards.

Here is some info about shin guards. If you are going to break your leg, a shin guard will do NOTHING. It is plastic. If you saw the tackle, Eduardo's foot got stuck to the ground. If he had been able to jump, he would be mad because he had cleats marks on his leg and that is it. It was unlucky. Either way, broken leg or not, the referee would have given the red. Also, the slide came in from the side and hit him on the side of his leg, missed the shin guard completely.

yes, but in 2 years when the NFHS calls for full-concrete encasement below the knees, he would have been safe and not suffered any damage...
back to the question at hand...issuing depends on the situation, as FIL noted above

For those who have seen the eduardo leg break incident, is the correct form to check on in the status of the player or to show the red card straight away? There is no clear black and white answer to this... Both ways you will take critism as a referee. If you check on the player, then issue the card, you will face critism for only issueing the card for the injury. If you card the player then worry about the injury, you will face critism for not looking after the player and getting them attention fast enough. It is a no win situation for the referee. However, I usually check on the player, and already know if I am issueing the card before hand. However, I rather be sure a player is ok fast, and worry about the card after.

I watched in on Fox Soccer Channel. It was disgusting. Its the equivalent of Willis McGahee tearing everything in his knee in the 04 national championship game. Very disturbing.

having seen one of the still shots, it shows the ref reaching for red as he is coming in. I guess the red card was being shown even before he could have seen the severity of the damage.
