We are way ahead of you on this one. We just announced (last weekend)at the La instructor/assessor clinic a new program rolling out very soon. A La Referee Academy. We have modeled our program after a few other states. We did not want to make ours exclusive like Ga. Our academy will be open to any and all who wish to participate. No selection process. If a referee has a desire to improve, we will take them and work with them.
What will it be? 1. Referees must "sign up" by filling out a form reflecting what they want to get from the program, long term/short term goals, etc 2. Commit to one academy event a year. The academy will be a tournament location where the participants will work together with their academy participants and commit to classroom sessions Fri and or Sat night. They will work games with young state referees and under the eyes of instructors and assessors as well. This will let the referees hear from assessors what should happen and allow them to see our upper referees actually doing it. Plus a young person is usually more approachable than some old assessor. The mix should be valuable. 3. There will be an email list for participants to discuss game situations with other academy participants 4. Academy participants will get emails with updates on all USSF memos, law changes, etc direct form the SRC so the knowledge is first hand and immediate 5. This next one is a hopeful - group discounts for attendance at PDL games as a group. Following the game, the referees of the match will meet with the referee academy participants to discuss game situations from the evening. The PDL assignor has already bought off on this one 6. Perks - academy events will allow referees to earn points at every event attended. Certain points are redeemable for referee equipment and gear
This is the goal and the development is underway. We have been discussing this program with other states who have shown high success rates at referee development. We have hopefully taken bits of the best, worked in some of our ideas and created a program we can grow in the future. Our hope is implementation no later than mid Fall. I have talked this up in my area and the interest is great.
