lcpsoccermom thanks for all the excuses. does it make you feel better to list our schedule. guess we will see in the playoffs. good luck to all the teams. I only a simple question was asked how our jv playing team beat them 4-0 and loyola tied. The only excuse I have made for our team all year is the horrible pk that was called and helped in the loss to loyola.( not to mention the center ref will be coaching at loyola next year! go figure.) Once again good luck to all teams in the playoffs.

I agree that it is not a good idea to use laprepsoccer.net's power ratings, they are TERRIBLY flawed.

Vandebilt moving ahead of Teurlings isn't that strange. As the season ends people are doing more research to make their decisions. For instance,Vandy tied Lafayette, who beat Teurlings twice.Vandy also beat Sacred Heart and Episcopal,2 very good teams from D3.Add to that Vandy has a 4pt better power rating than Teurlings according to Ken Ramsesy's stats.Vandy has also beaten LOYOLA,Morgan City(twice)and Lakeshore(twice) all 3 ranked in the top 10 of Dll.While giving full credit to Teurlings for a great season,I think there is a very good argument for Vandy's #1 ranking. I think that Teurlings, Vandebilt, and St. Louis all have reasons that they should be seeded #1 in Division II. Teurlings: Good mix of experienced and younger players. Play hard and physical, like most of the strong Division I teams. Don't have a lot of depth, which is why they took bad loss to Lafayette in 4th game of day. Won only match up of the year between the three, with 3-1 win against St. Louis early in the season. Vandebilt: Still a very young team, but they play like a team with experience. One of the best offensive teams in the state. They can score against anyone. But they are small and have trouble keeping the ball out of their net, especially against a physical team. They will try to outscore you to win. And usually can. Played in very weak district but has great playoff experience. St. Louis: Lost a lot of key seniors from last year's state championship team. Still have the core of the team back and can score on set pieces as well as any team in the state, especially throw-ins. Have a game with Lafayette(which Teurlings and Vandy have both played) on Monday that will be a good indicator where they will be entering the playoffs. Beat DeRidder(top 10) 5-1 and 6-0 in district play. Still the only one of the three to win 3 consecutive state championships. That experience goes a long way. My honest opinion: 1. Teurlings Catholic 2. Vandebilt Catholic 3. St. Louis Catholic -if St. Louis beats Lafayette on Monday, I would move them to second

Aliceshoe....Why is it that the Ref. excuse is any different from any other excuse? In the past week or so this board has been covered up with excuses. It was a nasty cold rainy night has got to be my all time favorite. I guess it was only nasty cold and rainy for one of the teams. We have seen and heard every kind of excuse possible, but when a very questionable call is used or mentioned on this board, yourself and others can't except it and you make a comment like, you got beat, get over it. Why not tell others that it was nasty and cold, so what get over it. Or, so what, you lost a player, get over it, that's soccer. Or who cares if it was your teams worst night of soccer, you got beat, get over it. It is very difficult to place blame on a Ref. and I agree that there are a million other things that occur during a game, but an excuse is an excuse. Just saying....

thanks wintheball. If they read my post i actually stated the only excuse i have said was the pk call. And everyone jumps on me for making statement. I have never made excuses for our team when we had two throwing up on sidelines from being sick! Our other girls stepped up and played best they could. Of which two of our losses came from. Cant wait to see the bracket posted!

It is very difficult to place blame on a Ref. and I agree that there are a million other things that occur during a game, but an excuse is an excuse. Just saying.... I agree, many excuses given. How about this rare one...the better team won... Amen, Aliceshoe. You never hear that from parents. Here is the problem with the "ref" excuse. Parents are in no way objective, thus their interpretation as to whether or not a foul should have been called can never be trusted. And, there is nothing wrong with that. Parents are not supposed to be objective observers. They are parents, or fans, which of course is short for "fanatics". They only see things through the rose colored glasses of the teams for which they root. And, that is the way is should be. The problem occurs when those parents start to believe that they actually are "objective" observes of the game and make posts with excuses regarding a poor call by the ref. I can almost guarantee that the center ref is a much more objective observer. That is not to say that the center will blow a call here or there. They will. But, I would be much more apt to trust their judgment before a parent. Examples of this are endless. Yesterday, I was running the line at a game. Center calls a foul. Good easy call. But, you have parents yelling from the stands "what was that" and "hey, do you need to read a rule book?" They are parents and as such, they are not objective and there is not anything wrong with that. Cheer and yell for your team. That is great. This happens almost every time I run a line for a HS game. Another example. The posts from the Byrd v. Captain Shreve boys game earlier this year (I think I have the schools right). Byrd parents took to the board outraged about a PK call by the ref that lead to the winning score. Now, this is nothing against Byrd parents. This could have been West Monroe, Lafayette or Mandeville parents. But, the next day, a video of the foul was posted on youtube and about a dozen refs, while acknowledging that it was a close call, all agreed with the call as a foul (a smaller number disagreed). The point being that the parents were not "objective" in their observation of the call and it was not the "worst call in the history of mankind". Again, I am not picking on the Byrd parents since it could have been parents from any other school. And, there is nothing wrong with that. That is, until they take to the boards and use it as an excuse as to why their team lost the game. After refing and coaching for a number of years, I can tell you that when I read that in a post, I automatically dismiss it as just a losing team unable to accept the fact that they got beat, not as an excuse. I could go on, but I am busy watching the Jersey Shore.

For the record- I have never made excuses for Loyola because of a loss or tie. When they play like crap, I am the first one to say so. Anyone who knows me, knows that I am bluntly honest. I was asked to explain why we tied Shreve. I came on and did so.

lcpsoccermom - If anyone on this site is claiming that a game played in a downpour on a slippery, sloppy, muddy field does not impact the game, then they are either blind, dumb or just blowing smoke out their ear Yes, both teams are playing on the same field, in the same rain, etc. BUT, and this is a big BUT, it also takes away a team's speed and serves to help a less-talented team more. A slip here or there - a miss that normally wouldn't happen, can be a game changer. It definitely helps the lesser team more times than not. Field conditions DO matter - just like missing a starter or two does. You seem to tell it like it is and have shown much restraint in your limited responses to the bait thrown your way lately Good luck to you guys in the postseason!

:)Hey, the champ, all we have is talk and that is what this forum is here for. I havn't had this much fun since I figured out how to stick a hot poker in my eye! The players will decide everything on the field but we must sling our opinions to and fro while we have the chance.

You seem to tell it like it is and have shown much restraint in your limited responses to the bait thrown your way lately Good luck to you guys in the postseason! You are right lcpsoccermom has a way of telling like it is except for when it comes to giving an accurate interpretation of games, especially if LCP loses or ties or barely pulls out a win. It is her version of "how it is". What I have noticed is when others try to "tell it like it is" they get removed from the board. I love "the better team won" excuse, but when a game is decided by a PK and a questionable one, it is hard to say the better team won. As lcpsoccermom so accurately reported, in the game in question, Loyola was the better team, in the 2nd half! I gave a complete analysis of this game, (was removed from board) which included the 1st half when the questionable PK actually occurred, the almost unbelievable missed opportunities Calvary had, a missed handball, in the box, that looked more like a volleyball serve, but I'm sure my rose colored glasses blurred my vision. Calvary had a ton of missed opportunities in the 1st half and yes the 2nd half was dominated by Loyola, but with no goals scored. We have all seen games lost by a team that dominated, but gave up one fast break goal. This one could have been the same. So, in the end, Loyola won. Better team?, not sure about that, as for my rose colored glasses and telling it like it is, I don't think anyone has a real problem losing to a better team. That's the problem with this loss. Can't talk about the Ref of this game. Pretty sure that's what got my post removed the first time. By the way, the Loyola/Shreve game was played on turf. Cold? yes, Rainy? yes, Muddy? No, Slippery and slow you down? Not really and No. Also, if not for a great save by the Loyola keeper in the last minute or so, Shreve wins this game. I think that was the point that was trying to be made in earlier posts. So much for telling it like it is. Congrats to all teams as they enter the playoffs. And yes, that includes Loyola! Good Luck!!

I finally get to see Calvary play tonight against Byrd. I've seen Parkway and Loyola. I think I will get a pretty good feel tonight on how good Calvary is after the game. I expect Byrd to win.

Steven Gerrard, I respect your knowledge of the game and what you do for it, but, do you really believe all referees are objective and do not have their own agenda? Case in point, godswill24's reply #20, dated Jan. 29, a CR is going to be a head coach at Loyola next year and was involved in a crucial call. It certainly makes a plausible case. We have been in the playoffs the last couple of years. The one thing that I have come to realize is that the deeper into the playoffs you go, the better the officiating. During district play no one knows what kind of affiliations these local refs have with any particular coaches or players. Local refs tend not to call certain things for whatever reason, but, when you go into the playoffs you get more professional refs who call the game as it should be called. The problem is the girls do things all year long with no penalities, then when they do get into the playoffs everything is called. Not questioning, just throwing this out there for thought. Any takers???

There were breakaways missed on both sides and many shots missed by Byrd. Both keepers and defenses played well. Good luck to Calvary and Byrd in the playoffs.

Byrd vs Calvary....this was a great game. Byrd was without a doubt the better team. They had several opportunities to score and just couldn't finish. Calvary had a few great opportunities but also failed to finish. Some great goal keeping from both keepers kept this game close. Thanks to both teams for an exciting night of soccer.

Any takers??? I have been involved as a coach, ref and spectator of club and high school soccer for 8 years now, and I have never seen a match where I thought that the ref was making calls one way because of any bias. Have I seen poor calls or poorly called games? Yes. But, thought that the ref was biased? Never. If you really believe that, then I suggest that you take the ref course and do some games yourself. Just run the line. It will give you a new perspective of things. And, after talking to other refs after matches, discussing this call or that non-call, you will come to learn that they really don't care who wins the game, just that it was played within the laws. I know all of the refs over here in the northeast corner of the state, and I can truly say that I don't think that any of them would be biased against one school or another, even if their daughter was playing for one of the teams. Some may disagree, and that is ok. I can only tell you what I know. As an aside, I had read at some point that the ref had some of his club players (that he coaches) on one team or another. That is a no-win situation for anyone. No matter how you call the game, the parents (not the players) are going to think that you called the game in favor of your club players. That is a tough spot to be in. And, one last point. Do you really believe that he awarded a PK just because he was going to be coaching that school next year? I mean, do you really, really think so? Do you really want to cast aspersions on this person. What would make you want to say that?
