As I said, some will quibble.
The last several years, one could have predicted the state winner in DIII from one or two teams, maybe three. This year, seems to be a little bit more parity, and don't really see that dominant team. Always seems to be a few more quality teams in DI.
With the limited number of overall teams and quality teams in DII, Aliceshoe's point about changing to two divisions would seem to have merit. I would agree with cutting the number of playoff teams, as well. Sorry, but the reality is that seed #32 really doesn't have a prayer.
Most years yes! But in 2007-2008, Woodlawn would have been the 32nd seed according to power ratings that year (seeding wasn't in effect till following year), and they upset Jesuit in semifinals (or was it quartefinals and they made the semis?). That was Jesuits last loss until last season. So as you can see, they do have a chance, albeit a very, very small one.
I am always in favor of giving the underdog his chance. I would favor a 16 team playoff for Division I NCAA football. The example you cited is noted. However, as weak as LA HS boys soccer can be for the lower tier teams, HS girls soccer is infinitely weaker. As of now, it would be unlikely that a #32 girls team could stay within single digit goals of a #1 team, and I think the playoffs could be better with fewer teams for several reasons. If the change were made to only two divisions, would probably go with a 32 team bracket then.
Re: injuries, div1coach, the unexpected loss of a key player due to injury or illness, or the return of a key player from same, can make a world of difference on many teams, especially from smaller schools. There are probably a few of the Div I girls schools that are deep enough that they can lose a key player and plug in another with no perceptible drop off in play. Vegas would take injury/illness into account when making book. Don't know if that is taken into account when seedings are done.

I helped to do the design work for the current spreadsheet on the boys side. If someone provides me with a list (in Excel) of Team Name, Division, and District (3 separate columns), I would be happy to create the file for you to use and provide any training if needed (it really will be pretty easy). At that point, someone would need to drop in all of the game results (the date, 2 teams, 2 scores) & the spreadsheet will do the rest. As far as the calcs, the boys use flat3 and lhsaa ratings systems. They are based on the result of that game as well as the cumulative results of your opponent over the whole season (not just at the point you play them). Tourney wins & full game wins are treated the same. I could do some tweaking but wouldn't want to overhaul that system too much (at least not this close to end of season). Flat3 calcs: - Wins = 100% of opponents # of wins + 5 points
- shootout win = 87.5% of opponents # of wins + 3.5 points
- Ties = 75% of opponents # of wins + 2.5 points
- shootout loss = 62.5% of opponents # of wins + 1.5 points
- Loss = 50% of opponents # of wins + 0 points
LHSAA calcs: - Wins = 100% of opponents # of wins + 5 points
- shootout win = 83.3% of opponents # of wins + 3.75 points
- Ties = 66.7% of opponents # of wins + 2.5 points
- shootout loss = 50% of opponents # of wins + 1.25 points
- Loss = 33.3% of opponents # of wins + 0 points
Note: Results vs. JV and out-of-state teams are not counted toward either of the power ratings. Soooo if someone wants to accumulate the data, I'd be happy to convert the design from boys to girls side (and help provide tech support). By the way, the spreadsheet will also calculate standings (district, division, and overall).

Well since it has been a long time and everyone wants a new poll, I will post mine.
(1.) Mt. Carmel - only 2 loses (Lafayette , Byrd) (2.) Lafayette - only 1 loss - Mt. Carmel (3.) SSA - haven't seen them, think they hibernate until district play. Only know of them playing ST. Thomas More early in the year, then WHO ELSE HAVE THEY PLAYED? (other than district) (4-8) - they are all even in my book,, based on records (STM, Mandy, Bryd, Fontainbleu & Dominican) the team you don't want to meet in the playoffs I feel will be STM, they seem to be getting it together as a team and buying into what their new coach is preaching (9.) Northshore - doing well in a tough district (10.) East Ascension - deserving to be included for the good season they are having but will have a very tough time sniffing victory with any of the teams ahead of them.
The state champ will come out of the top 8 listed, no doubt. Match ups will be key for the quarters & semi's, this could be anyone's title to take.
Will it be the Senior loaded Mt. Carmel Cubs, the Senior-less Lafayette Lions, the young guns from Shreveport (Byrd) or will it come from the Mandy area.
How much of a part will injuries and the weather have on the post season? Can't wait!!!!!!

Trying not to get defensive here but maybe it's the all CAPS: Other than having to play 6 top ten games within our own district. SSA has played MCA, Dominican, Sacred Heart, Lakeshore, St. Joseph, and Durchtown. Baton Rouge, St Josephs, and Chapelle have all cancelled on us this year.

I am curious, why does everyone want to calculate the POWER RANKINGS when it IS NOT USED IN SOCCER for high school? Just something else to argue about? Because we all know a team that has a winning record but NEVER leaves home and NEVER plays any of the teams that are continuously RANKED & FINISH in the TOP 10 could get more power point than teams like 1,2, & 4-8 who all play each other regardless if there could be a loss starring them in the face. Regardless of what power ranking you guys come up with, the winner will be in the top 8 listed above.

sokerfan, if you have not seen the Doves play, I would suggest you do. Then, perhaps you would not be making comments about who they have played. No, they do not play a lot of games until district as so many teams do. These pre-season tournaments are only ego trips. Coaches enter there teams in these tournaments and play teams like the "Little Sisters of the Poor" so their teams can beat up on them and their leading scorers can amass a lot of goals. What's the point? Why play teams you know you can beat? Besides, all these useless games take their toll on the players. And, may I inform you, since you do not watch the Doves play often, that they have been in the State Finals for the past three years and won two of those. The district they play in is home to four ranked teams, more than any other district in the state.

mydove4, why then no participation in the Holiday High school tournament at Lakeshore?all the top rated teams participated in all divisions-- "too many little sisters of the poor"?

We do not play over the Christmas holidays because I believe family comes first and I will not drag my players to the field the day after Christmas to prepare for a tournament a few days later. We've played 8 games vs d1 ranked opponents. We play Dominican and MCA our past two opponents in the state championship. I'm confused as to what competition we shy away from. I can assure you are strength of schedule is up to par with anyone. If I didn't think every coach looked at this website I wouldn't even entertain this conversation nor will I any further. Those who know me, know I have never turned down a quality match.

mortner- I agree with you 100%! teams who have a rigorous pre year training program, club balll then play 25 to 30 high school games, come Febuary legs to become fatigue. Most af theses athletes play year round so I believe 20 to 25 regular season games is sufficient. The Christmas time is a special time of year for families and gives these athletes a chance to recharge mentally and physically! I am a believer proof is in the pudding, SSA has been very successful under your tenure and this is coming from someone who has close ties to one of your district foes. As for as I have seen Mandeville, Fontainebleau and SSA have ALWAYS played quality teams from accross the state. Sometimes when you are successful people get jealous and will throw out all kinds of crazy comments. Good luck to you all except when you play...........

all the mandeville teams that play high school soccer..no one is questioning the quality of the teams that any HS chooses to play or not play, but lets not talk in a condescending manner about the Mandeville Holiday tournament like there was no competition there.. that was the point made..

I am not a so called Patriot fan, but this past year quality teams did participate in their tournament. Because a team does not chose (which I agree with) to participate in such a tournament (this time of year) do not assume because you are not there that this makes this tournament irreverent. One good thing about tournaments if you are a fan like myself this gave me the opportunity to see teams that in most cases I would have never been able to watch.

Agree, many high school team members play soccer all year long...BUT they don't play on the same team all year long! Pre Season/District tournaments provide a chance for team building and bonding (opportunity to tweak before district). When you put a bunch of girls together from different clubs and teams, it may take time to "mesh" personalities.

offsides- please look at the time of year of the tournament and you will see that is the point that was being made. this tournament is held during Christmas break (in the middle of district) so there should be no "tweaking" to prepare for and I agree with mortner with declining to play....if a team choses to play fine, but people should not assume a team is ducking competition when they pass on such an event...

Patriot Fan, your point was noted. But, I was definitely not referring to the Mandeville Holiday tournament held during mid-season. There were a ton of quality teams there. This tournament looked like the quarterfinals of the playoffs. I was not talking about any particular tournament. Sorry if anyone was offended. I'm just saying some teams do play a lot of extra games to get the additional work and in so doing compete below their caliber.

div1coach- don't misunderstand my point, I agree with you. My many high school soccer seasons taught me, high school soccer is an entirely different "kind" of soccer, especially on the girls' side. Tweaking happens all season. Lots of personalities, not a lot of time for training. SSA has a "proven" track record! Sokerfan's comments are silly, LHS has met SSA in the championship game and lost. That would be the only game most of the competition remembers. Beating "weak" teams won't get any team to the finals in any division. Some teams (weak districts) must attend tournaments to play more competitive teams. Some teams play competitive teams every week in district. It is high school soccer.

offsides- 10/4 tweaking happens all year and sometimes it is mandated because of injuries. my only thought was that if I was going to decline of playing in a specific tournament a tournament held that time of year (Christmas break) would be the one to pass. This can help a team out mentally and physically. Again up to the coaches because they know what their teams need to be the best that they can be!

mydove4--I just read your initial comment as a put down on tournaments and your comments may certainly be applicable to preseason tourneys. I do not know. The Mandeville tournament had many teams that will be in the states final 4 or 2 and I thought it sounded like a put down of it.
On the other hand-The only superior Div. I team that was not there was your team and we all missed out on an opportunity to see a potential final 4 or 2 team compete over 3 days. Good Luck in the states.

Your ties were against St. Scholastica and twice to Lafayette. Our losses were to Mt. Carmel, Dutchtown and Fontainebleau. Two of the three losses were one goal games. It's difficult for any team to win every game. Look at the Premeirship or any other league for that matter. Although I am a firm believer of beating the best to be the best. We were ranked #6 last year and won it ALL!! But agree the road can be a lot less bumpy with a higher seed.
