This year's pick em competitionFor the last several years, we've run various pick 'em contests (all for bragging rights). This year, the primary contest will be February Frenzy. You'll pick the whole playoffs (for 1, 2, or all 3 divisions) as soon as the brackets are released by LHSAA. I might do some other contests if I can work them in, but this will be our primary one. You can see some of the testing we did here. There's also a competition going on the girls side. The deadline will be prior to the first playoff game. Currently that's Thursday at 5pm, but if there's a game before that, the cutoff will move earlier. Points are awarded for correct picks (1 pt for each in 1st round, 2 ea in 2nd round, 4 ea in 3rd round, etc.). You need to pick all the way through to a Champion. It requires you do 1 round at a time. So pick round 1, click enter, and then go to round 2 and continue to repeat. Your ENTIRE bracket MUST be picked prior to the deadline. You can get your account setup at www.bracketmaker.com - they require an e-mail address, but they haven't spammed me so far. Your e-mail will only be visible to me (not to the other participants). Change your profile name to your LA Prep userid for ease of identifying. I will be displaying the profile names when I publish standings. I will name 3 Divisional Champions and a Grand Champion across all 3 divisions. To participate in the latter, simply make sure to get picks in for all 3 divisions prior to the deadline. Pick your brackets HEREIf you have any questions, just ask.

Paul, It's gonna be interesting to see the early round "upsets" that the PR system might create. A look back at last year's brackets (D-III) you'll note that with the exception of Haynes, Calvary Baptist, and PJP, ( I wouldn't call them shocking upsets) the seedlings were pretty accurate. I predict a slightly different playoff round this year:). lhsaaonline.org/MainBracket32.aspx?s=17&y=2014&d=III

I expect that Power Ratings will create issues (i.e. 15 game rule, the forfeiting implementation, etc) and I also expect that Power Ratings will get blamed for things that are just part of the game (i.e. any team on any day...) Keep in mind that last year's finals were #2 over #8 (DI), #8 over #3 (DII), and #5 over #2 (DIII). Not a single #1 seed in the finals and 2 of the winners were ranked 5th or lower. If that were to happen this year, I could almost guarantee that it would be the fault of the Power Ratings (which by the way were not in effect last year). Just food for thought (and no I do not believe Power Ratings are infallible either). Regardless, the first round and related discussions should be fun...

I'm going to wait for dust to settle this afternoon a little before I create pick 'em brackets. Make sure to check back later today to get your picks in. Tentative deadline will be 3pm Friday (unless any game gets scheduled earlier than that). Looks like there are some Thursday game times being posted.

i forgot my log in already bob Really? My teenagers don't give me this kind of trouble. I saw your username, bob, but I don't have any rights to anything. Go to sign-in page & put in your e-mail. Leave password blank & check box saying you forgot (just below that). Then click enter. They should walk you through a reset.

Looks like bob now has a password again...
D3 is also available from that link.
Deadline for picks is 5pm on Thursday (TOMORROW). Get your picks in now. Newman-Hannan tomorrow is making us get them all in early. And I can't have different deadlines for the different divisions.
So pick now!!

Being 20 hours away is a little disheartening. Would love to come down for the month. It's a fun time!

Let's add to the excitement. I went in for a sneak preview of the picks. You should all be able to view everyone's bracket once the deadline passes, but in the meantime....
Here's who the "experts" are picking to take it all:
D1: St. Paul's with 20 of 23 votes (Acadiana & Mandeville with the others)
D2: Dead heat with Beau Chene (5), Ben Franklin (4), Vandebilt (4), and St. Michael's (3) (remaining picks go to East Jefferson, Leesville, and Bolton)
D3: Almost a toss-up between Northlake (7) and University (5) (and balance to Newman, Lusher, and Haynes)
Soooo do you agree?
If not... get your picks in & show everybody else how much you know your LA Soccer.

WINNER - you need to COMPLETE your D1 entry before the deadline for it to count - it shows as not finished. Thanks!

p_malinichAre you offering a free trip and tickets to the Champions League Finals for the winner like you did last year? I don't have a budget this year. But if the winner wants to come to PA to go sledding, we'll find a place for you to crash (sleep not wreck on the sled).

Paul you are quoting the matchup ranking numbers from coach seeding. But the numbers for the theorectical computer seeding last year were different... and I'm not talking about the final computer seeding that took into account the results of the playoffs... I'm talking about the ones that would have been used to seed the playoffs. In that computer ranking case, Lusher was supposed to be ranked about 11th I think. And that wasn't the only strange thing. The computer had Menard 2nd or 3rd, etc. Fortunately the coach seed last year was pretty good. Now, the year before was a different animal....
