Wow what a match although it sounds pretty one-sided. Appears LHS is dominating possession but hasn't been able to finish.

What an incredible game this was. Extremely hard fought defensive struggle on a very warm and sunny day in February! It seems the heat took it's toll but both teams fought through to PKs. Third playoff season in a row that Lakeshore has advanced on a PK victory against an iconic girls high school soccer program in the state playoffs. Two years ago, 0-0 at Vandebilt in a quarterfinal match, advanced 5-4 on PKs; last year at STM in a semi-final match, 1-1 with a 3-2 advance on PKs and now today's result in the final. Unbelievable. And yes, I know STM players, coach, and fans must feel sick about the result; only soccer gives us such a gut-wrenching and horrible way to not prevail in a game but STM girls showed real grit in this game. Both sides did. STM had a great season and will probably find themselves back at Tad Gormley again next year; wouldn't be a big surprise to this observer.
Congrats to both sides on such inspiring tenacity and slugging it out to the end. Congrats Lakeshore on your first state championship in any team sport, boys or girls. Girls soccer at Lakeshore has come a very long way in just 7 years.

One correction to the NOLA.com article.... Lakeshore also reached State semi-finals during their second varsity season 2011-2012, losing at Vandebilt to a great team.

Congratulations to all the Lakeshore players today and their coach Wes. After many heartbreaking games since the School's opening varsity season, Coach Wes has reached the mountaintop with Lakeshore's first team State Championship.
A memorable win for this team....to be the first is to be very special...

Congrats to the nicest coach in the state of Louisiana! If only all coaches could be like Wes. Well deserved Wes Leake should be the 2017 Coach of the Year. This senior class learned his system, learned from their upper classmates and continued to progress to the next step each season (2014 Qtrs, 2015 Semis, 2016 Finals, 2017 Champions). He schedules games against the best teams in the state not just teams that will help with PR statistics, going 20-2-4 in the process. Wes is not only an outstanding coach, he is a solid, genuine person. Wes has restored my faith in soccer coaches the past couple of years, after some disappointing experiences outside of high school soccer. Congrats again to the Lady Titans. You didn't see any personal, individual agenda's getting in the way of overall high school soccer goals with this team. Team chemistry is a key ingredient to any championship run and these girls put the team first and played for each other, focused on one goal. No Drama, No Egos, more of a sisterhood than a team. Not bad for a public school from a city with roughly 10K residents.

Congratulations to Lakeshore. As hard as it is for STM to lose a game like that, Lakeshore deserved to win.
I predict this will be the DII rivalry for the next several years. Enjoy your championship. You've earned it. But we will be back next year, hungrier than ever :-)
PS - Because of travel involved, Lakeshore had a MUCH bigger student section than STM. Sometimes, large student groups get a little out-of-control. Not this time. The Lakeshore student section was loud, supportive of their team, but still respectful. I was very impressed with their behavior.
