I think a few of you that i angered initially are understanding my point. I have no problems with Shreveport. I will happily travel to Shreveport to see the finals, especially if my team makes it past Friday night. But the masses will not. Football, basketball and baseball will always get the press and coverage. Soccer is still one of the few self promoted sports. Heck, our team is in the semi finals and the articles/pictures have to be turned into the paper for coverage. And when it prints, it is a blip on the radar compared to basketball. I am not angry. That is just what people know.
Traveling/playing in and to the Dome is an honor and very exciting for HS Football players. This comparison should not even be in the argument. High School football has already created the following. It gets the press. So has basketball. The girls basketball sweet 16 is huge every year, breaking attendance records year after year. It too is a bid process.
My only analogy is, if you are going to open a new business (hs soccer) in which you need foot traffic to grow and be successful; (A) do you put it in a location that is most likely going to attract additional customers by its location. or
(B)do you place it on the outskirts of your potential market and hope people find it or show up.
And some of you may laugh at the comparison of HS Soccer to a new business. Start polling the general public if soccer was ever a sport that was available to them. Hence the ignorance of the rules of some parents/spectators.
You have to build the fan base first, and then you can put the event anywhere you want. Look what Omaha, Nebraska did with the College World Series.
I hope I will be visiting Shreveport next week sporting my team's colors. Good luck with the tourney.
