As a parent of two children who play club soccer and one child who played club soccer over five years ago, I am alarmed at the increased in games and tournaments on Sundays. Sunday has always been a family day for us, as it is for many other families I know. Sunday was the day we all got together and ate breakfast together before going to church as a family. Afterward, we would get lunch at Picadilly's or another nice, casual restaurant, or sometimes go back for a nice home-cooked meal. It is no longer like that these days. Sundays are very hectic. Sunday mornings are not a time of togetherness like they use to be. They are times of getting rushed to get one child to one game and the other child to the other.
The soccer associations are making mistakes by scheduling games and tournaments on Sundays. It is a disabling attempt by them to have a day that everyone previously had open. It's hard scheduling events on any other day because people already have other plans. But now, the soccer associations (and I suppose other organizations) are stealing Sundays from the families. I was taught as a child that Sundays are reserved for families and God. Now these people who consider soccer as their God are stealing Sundays.
I know you'll say that "If Sundays are that important to you, just quit soccer." It's not that simple. If the kids don't play on Sundays, they don't get to play soccer at all. The coaches won't allow it. I think it's unfair that the coaches say things as that. I asked one coach if my child went to every other event and skipped games on Sundays if he could be on the team. The coach laughed, and then we he saw I was serious, he answered no.
This is a serious problem that many associations need to address. I am only one voice on this message board, but I do talk to my fellow soccer parents. I'd say 25% of them voice similar concerns.
To end it, I think the soccer associations can solve this problem very simply. Just mark Sunday off as days available just as they mark off Christmas, Thanksgiving, etc.

Where exactly are you located. Here in LA, if you played club soccer (premier/select), your games were always on Sunday...ever since I can remember - 1988. As with tournaments...it's hard to play a tournament in one day...3 possibly 4-5 games in one day would kill some kids. This year, however, the premier games have been moved to Sat., but this is only to accomadate ODP, but tournaments are stilled played on Sat. & Sun.

I am not too sure what you are talking bout...Tournaments have always been played on Sundays....if tourneys would start on Friday then parents would whine because they have to work...and then if they were just one day tourneys on Saturday...then parents would whine becuase its too many games in one day.

Can't you go to church on saturday, or any other open day? Select Soccer is about commitment, and if you don't have enough commitment to go to Sunday games, then I guess Rec. Ball is right for you. I also don't remember when Sunday was a day off for soccer (other than in high school, but that's a different forum).

wah wah shut up you are so whiny I know what the problem is here and thats the fact that you go to church. How does church make you a better person? It doesn't if you are so dumb that you wouldn't know better then to sleep with your neighbors wife or to kill someone w/o the church telling you then you might as well kill yourself.

Yea, na, you are right. Augstine, Aquinas, Abelard, Bonaventure, Luther, Calvin, Kant, Kierkegaard, Schleiermacher, Lessing, Pascal, Descartes, Locke, Ben Franklin, Abraham Lincoln, Winston Churchill, Barth, and MLK Jr. all went to church because they were "so dumb that [they] wouldn't know better than(sic.) to sleep with [their] neighbor's(sic.) wife or to kill someone." Let us disregard those minds because your mind far outweighs theirs. I agree with your wonderful and infinite wisdom.

As someone who is very neutral to this subject...because i do not know any of you i feel that this message board is not going well. Games have always been played on sundays when it comes to tourneys....thats how it is and many people like it that way. Christ is very accepting if there is no possibility to go to mass on Sunday..but correct there is saturday. i beleive that this forum was not started to try and make a change but just to talk and nit pic...which isnt right int he first place......I also feel that Church DOES NOT MAKE YOU A BETTER PERSON.....faith does....Faith in our almighty father makes u the better person. Am i sayin dont go to church on sundays....no!....i am saying that when it comes down to it....Christ is going to judge you by your faith and your works....not by you going to mass.....do i also feel that not going to mass is a sin?....of course...but only if there is no possibility you can make it...remember for you to be in sin w/Christ...you must have fool knowledge of the sin...be aware that u are sinning.....and be fully conscious of that sin.......and for the person who made the very rude comments about adultery and murder....be more respectful for you are always in the presence of Christ...May all of us here in the forum strive to be saints.....God bless!....

OK, someone help me out on this one. My son's team had to play a League game on Sunday morning at 9:30 am. No tournament, just an ordinary League game. I guess the schedulers in Baton Rouge do not attend church, or maybe they do not have faith in their Creator.

I play CABOSA (very NW of state), and even though we do play on Sundays, the first game doesnt start until somewhere around 1:30 or so, leaving plenty of time for church. Mabye other associations vcould do this to appease everybody. (I must say though, that as far as I remember, Sunday has always been fair game for soccer)

soccer games have been played on sundays since forever. why try and stop it now. you will just ruin the sport for everyone else. most soccer games are on saturdays anyway, there are very few times that games are played on sundays. the only exceptions to this are scrimmages, semis and finals, games the coach has scheduled on his/ her own behalf, and games that couldnt fit on saturdays because of schedule conflicts. i understand that you want your children to attend church and learn about their creator. what you must understand that there are other ways to go about this. first off, you may emphasize the religion more in your home and instill these values in your child. if this is don then those days that church is missed not much is lost. secondly, church is not what makes your child a better person. i can speak from personal experiences that if you dont truly believe, church will not fix it. the faith must come from within. finally, you must realize that soccer is all about committment. if your child plays select soccer, he/she chose to take the next step in their career. select involves alot of away games, tournaments, and practices. if your child can't handle it they should move down to rec + or rec. good luck with your decision and God bless. ps. i wonder why the seventh day adventists arent complaining. their particular day of worship is saturday, the most eventful day of all.

Okay, people. Anyone who knows anything about club soccer know that games are quite often played on sundays, whether they be tournaments, league play, friendlies, or otherwise. Entering club soccer, you have to be willing to make sacrifices: academic, social, and even religious. If you don't want to miss church, don't put your kid on a club team. Oh, and NOSA parent...yes, not everyone here in Baton Rouge has faith in "their Creator", because not everyone believes in one. However, I'm sure the schedulers do, but they're crazy people.

They have mass on Sunday morning, noon, and afternoon, as well as Saturday afternoon. These times are there to accomodate church to a person's schedule.

I'm also a neutral on this subject b/c I do not go to church, however I'm not an atheist, and I do play soccer. As long as I can remember soccer tournaments for select have always been on Sundays. Now that I play high school soccer we never have tournaments on Sundays. Sometimes we actually have to miss school because the tournament must start during the weekday in order not to go into Sunday. So atleast you have that, if they play high school. Just a thought...

Thank you for your post. As a parent of 2 different players (girl & boy), time constraints big concern in our family. We do everything possible to limit the Sundays as much as possible but do realize the conflicts. We have checked in to area churches at the various tourneys we have been to (as has others on team). We always stress faith/worship/family not confined to a bldg.

JUST STRAIGHT OUT PLAYING ON SUNDAYS MEANS THERE IS NOT ENOUGH TIME TO PLAY ON SATURDAY WHICH MEANS THAT THERE ARE MORE PEOPLE PLAYING THE SPORT IN YOUR AREA WICH MEANS UR KIDS AND US PLAYERS ARE GETTING A BIGGER CHANCE TO [glow=red,2,300]LEARN AND PLAY SOCCER[/glow] WHICH IS WHAT WE WANT
