As bad as this tragedy is on all the people of New Orleans, Slidell, etc. with people losing their homes, businesses, and way of life... it would seem that the student athletes may also lose their sports season unless the schools are able to get up and running by the time the soccer season starts. With the devastation I've seen on tv I don't see how this could be likely. Even after the water is drained or pumped out of the city schools, houses, etc. have to be rebuilt or "fixed" for water damage. The entire electric grid of the city has to be replaced as well. From what I've heard on tv many families that can afford it are going ahead and trying to buy or rent houses elsewhere and get their kids back in school now. I would think that some of these will end up being athletes and will play at different schools this year.
One thing is for sure...everyone affected by the hurricane deserves our prayers...this will not be a short recovery for the city.

Would students that moved to other schools even be allowed to play any high school sports?

I heard that kids are transfering to other schools just to stay enrolled. But as for athletics, i doubt that it would be possible to be able to play for another school. Its so sad b/c i know that their are many New Orleans teams that are really looking forward to this season especially the seniors. I would be heart broken. Good luck to all people in the new orleans area.
also, are the kids from schools like jesuit and brother martin (private schools) are they going to be enrolled in the public school systems? Or do they enroll in private schools only?

Maybe the LHSAA can make an exception for such an extraordinary circumstance that all these people find themselves in.

according to today's Lafayette Daily Advertiser, the LHSAA Executive Committe will meet today to decide eligibility questions. According to the article, there is a possibility that immediate eligibility could be granted for homeless students who transfer to new schools.

There is no way these kids will not be allowed to play. For one thing the only major sport that is in question is football and the reason would be that the season has already begun. However, when a person moves from one place to another they become eligible. This would include those other sports that come later, namely soccer.
Not to mention the NCLB (No Child Left Behind Act) and the McKinney Vento Homeless Act is legislation that allows for "homeless" children to be enrolled at schools other than their "parent's" home attendence zone. I would think a natural disaster of these proportions qualifies.
If that's not enough there is NO WAY the LHSAA will face the PUBLIC ONSLAUGHT of bad press that would result if they were to keep these kids from playing. I feel confident that the LHSAA wants to do everything possible for these kids in this situation.

Just Posted on LHSAA.org:
Displaced Students and Their Eligibility Posted 9/1/05
A conference call of the LHSAA Executive Committee was held Thursday, September 1 at 10:00 am to address the tragic situations that have occurred because of Hurricane Katrina. Listed below are the new rules adopted. AMEND ARTICLE 1, ELIGIBILITY, BY ADDING RULE 1.1.4, PAGE B-1 OF THE 2005-06 LHSAA HANDBOOK, TO BE WORDED AS FOLLOWS:
“1.1.4 Effective for only the first semester of the 2005-06 school year, a student who has been attending a school prior to Hurricane Katrina that has been classified a storm disaster parish by the Office of Emergency Preparedness and who has been displaced to a site in another parish shall be considered a “homeless” student for LHSAA purposes and shall become immediately eligible and remain under the Residence and School Transfers Rule at the first school he/she enrolls in and attends in that parish or an adjacent parish under the following conditions:
He/she meets the requirements of the Age Rule.
His/her principal makes his/her best effort to assure that the student is eligible under the following LHSAA rules:
Bona Fide Student Rule
Age Requirements Rule
Medical Examination Rule
Length of Eligibility
Scholastic Requirements Rule
All Other Applicable Eligibility Rules The principal reports the student on an eligibility form and a special form prepared by the Commissioner and timely files these forms with the LHSAA prior to the student’s participation in an interscholastic athletic contest.
Forms postmarked prior to the student’s participation shall meet the requirements of being timely filed.
The student shall be allowed only one choice of schools for immediate eligibility under this rule.
Should the student execute the choice and subsequently enroll in and attend another LHSAA school in that parish or a connecting adjacent parish, he/she shall become immediately ineligible at that school for a period of one calendar year from his/her enrollment date.
In the event the school system is required to transfer the student to a second school because of logistical reasons, his/her case may be addressed through the LHSAA’s Hardship Program.
It shall be a violation of the LHSAA’s Recruiting Rule for anyone connected with a member school to contact one of these students in an attempt to persuade the student to attend that school for any reason.
TO BECOME EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY”

I think it's obvious that they mean the sports starting in the fall. It wouldn't make sense to make them become inelgible in the spring. Give the LHSAA SOME credit, come on.

what it means is that what ever school they enroll into is what school they can play a sport for like we have 5 basketball players enrolled already and they are practicing. So yes if they are enrolling in CHS then thats where they will play.

That is what I was thinking. I hear BR's population has nearly doubled. I would bet Lafayette is close to the same.
