ECNL is a US Club affiliated league. Which means you can be on a US Youth team (like a LCSL team) and a US Club team that is part of a different club. Now the clubs don’t like that but it’s perfectly legal to do. Us Club teams are allowed 26 on their roster, but still limited to 18 in league play or 22 in tournaments, to be active for each game/event. Yes. ECNL is the highest level you can play in club. It provides the best platform for a young player to be seen by college coaches. A lot of showcase tournaments. Like I tell the players and parents in our organization, we will create and provide opportunities for you, but you have to put the work in to achieve what you want to achieve. Ultimately it's up to you. I think it would be nice if clubs would not treat these kids like possessions. We all should want what is best for the player. If I was approached by another club telling me they had an opportunity for one of our players to play in a showcase with them, I would be more than happy to let that kid play. You never know what doors it could open up for them. ECNL is above MLS Next? I thought MLS Next was the top of the pyramid

Because the MLS Academies are in the league, the best players should end up there, which should mean that MLS Next will crystalize as the best league. However, MLS Next has only existed for less than a year, so it's possible for a power shift to happen, but probably not likely. ECNL is very good though-- way better GSPL or USYS MidSouth League-- because competition is routinely high.

ECNL is still the top level of youth soccer in the US.
It will take ~10 years for MLS next to equal overall quality.
Being an ECNL team not not equal being better than non-ECNL team. Louisiana had a couple teams in Dallas that competed well with ECNL teams. I believe overall they went 2-1 overall with the loss a 1-0 defeat where they had the better chances. Great showing for Louisiana.

Are you sure ECNL is top level for boys soccer? I believe that might be true for girls... but I'm pretty sure MLS Next is the top level of boys soccer in this county. And for the most elite, MLS Academies seem to be the way to make it over to Europe. Dallas, Red Bulls, etc. There is a new Elite Academy League that is for players trying to work their way into MLS Next teams. I think elite boys are mostly playing EA and MLS Next.
As far as LA teams competing with them... I would be interested to know if any LA boys teams have played MLS Next or Elite Academy teams.

MLS Next teams are a lot like DA used to be-- they play each other and that's pretty much it. I think MLS Next teams can get "released" to play non MLS Next games, but they don't seem to do it often because it is seen to hurt development. That is also why they don't allow players to play high school. Yes, it is true that top LA club teams have competed with, and beat ECNL teams. Take FC Dallas for example ~~ Their best team in each age group plays MLS Next and their second team plays ECNL. Then they have a bunch of club teams that play USYS and US Club soccer.

It will take several years for MLS to grab the talent necessary to overtake the ECNL, and it will happen. MLS is banking on it.
The DA system had flaws. Mostly monetary, limiting who played. To be part of MLS Next, you have to demonstrate your ability to allow everyone to play.

To be part of MLS Next, you have to demonstrate your ability to allow everyone to play. MLS Next already has the academies for all the MLS teams. Players who go there have their educations paid for and all soccer costs limited. The best of the best end up there, and some of them even get signed by a European team straight from the academies. MLS Next should assert itself in due time, if there is any doubt about it, because they have the monetary backing of the MLS and can actually give low/no cost soccer to the most talented kids.

Correct. MLS Next is top of the pyramid for Boys, ECNL for girls. We all know the DA system was tops for boys, it was replaced with MLS Next. You might could argue some boys ECNL teams could play with MLS Next teams, however, most big Clubs play their boys “B” Team in ECNL

Seems like sting only got girls team going and that was due to takeover of 07 girls Cosmos. Or are there boys teams? The boys teams FC Galaxy had prior to the merger moved over to PARDS for the most part. They had 3-5 teams between academy and 06 beforehand. Now I think they have mostly younger kids and the 07G team which is really good. That was a good move for the Cosmos group. The Sting brand seems to be offering opportunities for a team of their level. The merger with STING has been great for our 07 G's team, confirming I made the right move. Yes, we lost a few boys teams, but that hasn't necessarily been a bad thing. It has freed me up, and allowed me time to advocate on behalf of our girls. In less than one year, 4 of them are playing in the ECNL and doing very well. This was one of the main reasons for the merger and it's paying dividends. Hopefully we will field boys teams in the near future. We will have tryouts for boys 2009 and younger in April for the 2021-2022 seasons. We'll see what happens. We need players, parents and coaches who are willing to go through the development process, and not just be concerned with the results in the win/loss column. We need them buying into what we're doing and not despise the process but rather embrace it. Results in the W column will come at the appropriate time.

I would also point out that STING does not take credit for the development and success of our 07 G's team. Coach Mike has done a fantastic job with these girls and THEY have put in the work needed to be successful. As viewgator91 stated, we have been able to provide opportunities for them that they otherwise would not have had, and that is a fact. We have some really unique things scheduled for them that they never would have had prior to joining us, and we're very excited about that. Our job is to take them to a higher level, and it's evident that is happening.

So are the 07G the only Sting team currently? You mentioned earlier the boys teams left. I know the 06 Girls didn't have enough to stay so they split off into other places(PARDS, Texans, etc.). Are there older or younger girls teams? I've got a relative in Livingston looking at options for a 9 year old, just curious if that was something you could support

All of these efforts (Gulf South Texans, Sting, Dynamo, Louisiana United) are moving the ball in the right direction. At least these teams are proving that there are some Louisiana players good enough to compete nationally. But in order to succeed, these individual efforts must become collective and unified. And the Louisiana players can't be locked into a single ECNL club opportunity with only 2 Discovery Player spots available. It's not until U18 that the DP spots increase from 2 to 4 and that's too late.
On top of that, the level of coaching and training here must ramp up exponentially. The rest of the country has professional, full time soccer coaches. Louisiana has coaches who do their best with their available time, but almost all have day jobs. Can anyone name any full time soccer coaches in Louisiana, where that's ALL they do?
