let me hit you with a hypothetical - if i was a ref what would be the punishment if i also started an underground betting ring and rigged the games? (asking for a friend of course) I was wondering this as well (also for a friend) Yea I'm deeply interested in finding this out as well (also for a friend)

After being in Hattiesburg all weekend, I totally understand why I don't get yelled at when I am there refereeing... They have zero clue on advantage, offside, handballs, or even a proper throw-in. It was for a Mid-South weekend too... horrid. They = parents or they = refs ?? The referees.... soooo... soooo.... bad.

Spring tournaments are in full swing right now. You could be making some serious pocket change on the side. And most of that is cash.
New and experienced referees in my area have mentorship at no additional cost to the referee, the leagues pay for the mentor. Last night we had a practice kicks from the mark and wound up with three situations not normally seen during kicks, but could happen, and now those referees will have the right answer. Would you?
1) Goalkeeper gets injured and cannot continue kicks from the mark. 2) What is "reduce to equate" and how does it affect kicks from the mark (this is not a school concept) 3) What happens when a kicker attempts to kick twice before another eligible player has shot

Another weekend, another dozen emails looking for referees - everywhere local or out of state - Baton Rouge, Denham, Gulfport, I got emails and offers from Virginia and Delaware also - and my group will be headed to Chicago in June for a tournament with a very generous pay scale.
Easy money for you guys/girls that have been playing

Those of you in HS or about to go to college- do it. The friends you make and the money as you get better is well worth it. Made some good drink money during college when refereeing HS and JUCO in the fall/winter and club tournaments in the spring into the summer.

Easy money for you guys/girls that have been playing What cert is necessary after Grassroots for these? Once you get your Grassroots certification you are eligible to work all of these. I have made a ton of connections around the nation and they're always asking if I can bring a group. We've been to Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, and Maryland as a group, and support every tournament we can in Louisiana to help other local groups. Getting experience at local games and getting feedback from your local instructor/mentor gives you confidence to work these tournaments - which are often 10+ games in a weekend, each of them their own mini-World Cup. Some people go to these as individuals, I prefer to travel with an entourage.

As a former referee, anyone who doesn’t think this issue is self inflicted is absolutely wrong. There is a direct correlation between diminishing number of soccer (and other sports) referees and the absurd behavior of players, coaches and fans. When an idiot player chirps at a referee all game long things like “the whole ball ref!” and “it is when the ball is played” it takes it toll. How rude and disrespectful of a player to behave like that. The bigger issue to me is the players learn this is acceptable from the stands as parents yell all game “he is using his hands” and “that is obstruction, he didn’t play the ball” and other idiotic sayings that usually have no bearing on the play or the rules of the game. It is a common theme that referees “can’t do this for the money” but the reality is that is now the only reason to do it, and that is the quality and quantity of referee that remains. I am not saying that I don’t think there are any good referees, because I think there are, I am saying that pool has diminished so much that the number of good ones is very very small. Fans, players and coaches have taken the enjoyment out of that profession, and there is nothing left to attract new people or keep existing ones there. I challenge you to take tie into consideration the next time you watch, play it coach a game. Is it even conceivable that the referee intentionally messed up to screw you?? Absolutely not. Is it possible he/she made a mistake in how they saw the play?Of course! Is it equally as possible YOU made a mistake in how you saw it? Just as likely. Also, if it were possible to get that best angles of offside and other fouls from either the stands or the bench, they would relax and do it there. They don’t, they run up and down the field to get a better angle and vision than you have. How many times does an opposite end GK complain about a close offside call? WAY too many considering he is 70 yard me away not on a linear angle, yet we accept that he can see it better and gets a right to complain? Okay, rant over, but I will leave you with this. The next time a striker misses an open net or a GK fumbles an easy save for a tap in or any player mis hits a ball and it goes out of bounds, does the referee crew now have the right to scream “ come on stupid, that was an easy shot, you suck!” Or “is this your first game, have you ever made a pass, my 5 year old can do that, you need to quit!” to your point about seeing things. Listen to 5 eye witness accounts of a car wreck. Not one is the same 99% of the time. The ref is right as an average across all professional and collegiate sports 90% of the time. The 10% missed is just as much a part of any game that I have ever enjoyed watching. I have no issue with referee's missing calls - it's all in the angle, the play, and/or discretion of the officials on the field and sidelines. What I have a problem with, and have dealt with this 2 weekends in a row, is a referee that fails to control the game. When physicality starts getting out of hand and players are called for fouls 10-20 times in a game, but no caution or discussion is made, then there is no consequence to stop the behavior and players get hurt. I'm headed to the doctor today to deal with a concussion that should have NEVER happened had the ref controlled the game. I don't agree with parents screaming at ref's but I also think that when it gets out of hand, it can be hard to take a breath and step away (especially when your children are getting injured). I also don't agree with the referee responding to a parent after he told her it was a bad call, that he was only talking to her like that because she was a woman. My son is a referee and I have sat with him during his online classes so I can learn more about the rules and regulations. I know this is a tough, mostly thankless job, but I wish there were some sort of consequence for those officials who continuously allowed the game to get out of hand, especially when the players get hurt due to bad game management. On a side note, I'm incredibly grateful to John I. for his mentorship and leadership with my son as he is learning how to handle parents & players. It's a lifelong skill that he will take with him into adulthood.

Seen lots of new referees at Open Cup this last weekend at Burbank
Plenty of tournaments in MS AL FL offering travel pay, rooms, tournament pay, lots of incentives when demand is double the supply or more. We have at least the next 6 weekends booked solid. Multiply that by the number of games you want to work and there’s a pretty penny to be made if you’re certified and work hard. All doing something you enjoy.

Small update. We had a meeting with statewide Regional Coordinator of Officials (assignors) last night. Soccer numbers were just under 400 statewide for HS. Years before we averaged 420-430. Some areas took a bigger hit than others. So if we can average picking up at least 3 new officials per area, we can get our numbers back to where they were pre-pandemic

Hey class of 21, you guys wanna stay on the field and make some great money on the side? We need new officials in all areas for both youth and school games. Youth courses begin in August with the school exam in October.
Pay scales vary by location but here is ours on the bayou: Varsity: 55/50/50 or 60/60 plus travel - 40 min halves JV: 47/44/44 or 55/55 plus travel - 35 min halves Junior high: 36/32/32 or 50/50 plus travel - 25 min halves
You’re making some good extra money working when you are available (and believe me there are always extra games to be picked up), community service is a pretty good looking tiebreaker on a resume, and you might find that it’s a part of the game that you truly enjoy.
Send me a message or contact your local RCO/assignor in your area, I’ll be glad to put you in touch with the right folks and get you on the field soon!

Let’s be honest - having two referees on a varsity game is worse than catching a school of 11 inch trout. Which is why we need more referees to sign up and be available.
