Yeah… They played hard and had heart….but the difference between the experienced Dutch and the youth of America on the big stage is they were just better. They played cleaner, moved the ball well and capitalized when the opportunity presented itself. It was poise and purpose vs hopeful courageousness.
I really liked what Patrick Dempsey and Landon Donovan said afterwards: We only had one full complete game and that was against England…We had a lot of good 1st halves. In order to take this to the next level, we have to have more complete games.
In order to advance in the World Cup, you must compete at a high high level every game.
I thought Pulisic played well. Been nice to score that one bud. Dest played very well but pittered out. Fearless 1v1. McKinney/Musah did not deliver- the Dutch crowded them hard. Ream/Zimmerman are big and slow. Turner has increased his international worth.

We had quality depth, but I do no think Berhalter used it enough. Look at Robinson. We mentioned his poor touch and that seemed to happened as he was gassed. At some point you got to try and give him a spell out so he can rejuvenate and be ready for the next game. Problem is there is no guarantee there is a next game so you are gambling if you do not play your best every game; however, as I mentioned before, playing your best every game is how you wear your team out and it usually doom you. This is common amongst all teams and you see it over and over in World Cups.

It was a very disappointing defensive performance considering how well the defense played in the group stage. All three goals were people running free and wide open. The outside backs and midfield trio had a ton of work to do and the lack of depth was a major issue. I think Adams/McKennie/Musah were great, but they had to play too many minutes. The WC is always hard on players, and that's even more true this year with the compressed schedule. We had some depth with our three attacking positions, but we had too much of a drop-off when the center mids or Dest/Robinson went out.
Turner was fantastic throughout the tournament. Absolutely the right decision by Berhalter to make him #1.
I think this team was as skilled as any we've ever had. Unfortunately we didn't have the depth to cope with such a demanding schedule. Hindsight is 20/20, but maybe we should've made a few more changes vs. England. Even with a loss in that match, we'd likely have been in the same must-win position against Iran that we ended up in (just with the possibility of a fluke result in Wales-England knocking us out).

I like this response of Kevin. I like his notion of maybe we needed to rest better players against England since it really meant nothing in advancing in the grand scheme of things. I think the reason the guys were not tracking back properly and guarding their men, was they were physically unable to due to fitness. This may have been avoided if we rested them during England. Would Acosta playing for Adams changed the result of us not advancing? Would Scalley starting for Dest or Robinson changed things? Maybe, maybe not. It is what it is. Do any of you think the USMNT is up to the level of the Netherlands? I do not and I was feeling it was the end of our WC when I woke up yesterday and I was hopeful that we would show it, but after 15 minutes, we could all see it was not going to happen. We as a nation need to keep progressing forward. We have a lot of young talented players coming up that will fight with the current crop for positions of the 2026 team.

Also, we have to progress to the point where we do not just want to advance out of the group stages, but that we wast to win the group in order to get a better opponent in the round of 16.

Bad game all round. I think the main difference in the game was the Dutch had a clear game plan to thwart our playing style and Gregg never properly adjusted to it. They sat in passing lanes and dared our CBs to be the ones to make plays. They picked off multiple passes from Ream and Zimmerman and we had no answer. Sure we had more possession but for what? They were more than happy to allow us to overextend and counter with quick passing and good movement. Gregg never saw this was the case and thus we fell directly into their trap three times. We should have switched our style and made them come at us but once they scored the first goal that was no longer an option. Shame on Gregg.
First gaol - Adams didn't track back Second goal - Dest loses his man Third goal - Robinson marks the wrong man. Three simple mistakes cost us the game.
Let's not forget we blew our best chances. Pulisic should have put us up early in the third minute. Haji has the touch of a rapist on the intercepted back pass and ruins an easy goal.
My biggest takeaway from this game was I felt our players played like cowards. We yielded possession to them numerous times without challenging at all. The guys looked scared and not up for it at all. No-one wants to be the man who steps up and tries to actually score a goal. Soccer punishes cowards. the US were punished on the day. This game was un-American. We're normally able to say our team was at least gritty and showed heart. I didn't see that against Holland.
Ultimately I see this World Cup as a failure. Three goals from four games won't do. One win from four games won't do. Gregg can not continue with this team.

I think even the 94 team scored 3 goals in 4 games and that was before we had MLS. I am getting unhappy in reading remarks from fans asking for Berhalter to return for the 2026 run. Did we not learn our lesson after 2014? I rather Bora Milotinovic coach us in the USA again, rather than Berhalter.

With some actual talent on the field I think who could get the best out of our players. if not Klinsmann, give me Big Sam.
