What happens when a team is found to have an ineligible player. Do they get fined or do they have to forfeit the games played?

So if he played the whole season does that mean that all the games he played will be forfeited?

If a player that is ineligible plays for 1 second, the game will be forfeited. There is a zero tolerance for this in all sports. Ineligible players are not to be dressed out or sit in the bench area. The fine may be if an ineligible player suits up and sits the bench but doesn't play.

Why would a program play an ineligible player, especially a play off caliber team? Surely the coaches know who can play and who can not

A player is deemed ineligible if they a) live outside of the home attendance zone for the school and participate in athletics before they were in that school for one year, b) turn 19 years old before Sept 1 of their senior year c) dont maintain at least a 1.5 Cumulative SEMESTER GPA and pass 5 units per the current semester or d) participate in a varsity sport earlier than 30 days after their initial enrollment to a school if they move and transfer. Those are the biggest reasons for a player to be determined ineligible(there are some others). LHSAA's rules are quite simple--If a player is deemed to be ineligible, any game that player participated in will have to be forfeited....period. LHSAA in the past has extended its definition of "participated in" to include dressing out and sittting on the bench. There are no appeals and there are no "what ifs". Its really simple. Now, if your name got left off the roster, theres really no penalty for that, unless a player gets ejected and the officials cannot determine the identity of the player, but that still wont really cause too much turmoil. Fines might occur, but they will only be substantial if a program willingly allowed a player to participate knowing they were ineligible. Sorry as that may sound, it does happen.

the new rule people were thinking of last year was if there was an inelgible coach. ... then there is a school fine .....
if it's a player, it's a forfeit. no exceptions.

It happened to Covington when they played the foreign exchange student about 2 years ago. I think Northshore went in their place. (Should have been a playoff with FHS)

It sure did happen to us. The FHS principal denied entry to an exchange student who was subsequently sent to CHS. No one but our principal knew of this arrangement...not even our AD. Even though his address was in " Covington", he was actually in FHS's district (it was down hwy 36). Our tennis coach lived two houses down from the host family and came to me wanting to know how he was able to play. She had an exchange student who was also out of district and wanted to have her play tennis. She said her son was ineligible soooooooo... I went to my AD so we could self report. In short, LHSAA said the rule is simple....all games he played in were forfeits. When told of the situation, they were very simpathetic but it was my resposibilty to ensure that the address listed was physically within our district boundaries. I reported the matches he played in which (usually 5 - 10 minutes per match) and forfeited the matches. MHS went from 3rd to 2nd, NHS went form 4th to 3rd and Slidell won a tie breaker with FHS for 4th. Needless to say, the team was devastated and I felt terrible. I offered to resign in order for the boy's to continue playing, but an appeals committee ruled against that idea. In hindsight, I know the right thing was done but boy was it a tough time for me personally. Given what I have just said, LHSAA was just doing their job so it ended up being a life lesson for me and my team. I feel for the team defendermom is writing about. I hope the rule has changed. To this day I feel my guys were messed over. I have no hard feelings towards LHSAA and believe it or not I am still close with many of those guys. Still, Ihope for her sake they can avoid what we went through. Coach Inman

if a school has middle school children, i beleive it is ok for them to play varsity sports. they are not held to just four years. their "term elligibility" begins their fresh year.
