I very much agree with the opinion that the #3,4, & 5 shouldn't be counted out. That is the beauty of the game. The real shame is that some teams up north get an automatic playoff birth b/c there are only 3 teams in the district. Truly a shame that a team with 0 wins in district can make the playoffs, while other potentially stronger teams have to fight tooth and nail to make it in.
Maybe it should be changed to only the District Champs and the runner-up get an automatic bid, and everybody else is considered a wild-card.....also opening it up to the #6 teams in districts.
I personally would also like the see the WC's placed in the brackets starting from the top down according to their records and not based on travel distance. Basing it on travel only assures that S. LA teams get to face off against other S. LA teams early on and some N. LA teams get the easy runs.
I remember two years ago when Caddo Mag got the only bye in the first round b/c LHSAA was one WC short and all the others were closer to everybody else.

barbedad20, I agree with most of what you have said, and I agree that District 3 is a good tough district. However, if you think your 4 and 5 seeds would play tremendously better than some of the other WCs did against teams like Fontainebleau, then I think you are mistaken. For the record, I'm not talking about the score, I'm talking about the dominance. Let's keep it real.

I feel that both alleyball and barbedad both make valid points. An analysis of the 1st round games show that all district champs advanced. About half the games were "blowouts" and half were fairly close (1-3 goal margins). I do think barbedad is correct that District 3's wildcards played much more competitively than the other districts. I think we'll get a better handle on Fontainebleau's "dominance" after this round's match with Dominican.

Great post by barbedad20 and alleyball. I too think you both make valid points, however I think a portion of this theory will be tested next week when 8-1 plays 3-3.
This topic also poses the question “What is the toughest district in Division I”?

Here is another part of this saga...... I wish the brackets were set so the 1,2,3 and 4 seeds were placed so that a district is not eliminating teams from its own district until the final rounds. Looking ahead at what could happen (not saying it will) but if St Joes and St Amant win this week and Barbe and Acadiana win this week and Chapelle and Dominican win this week then in the quarterfinals you have district teams playing each other again and eliminating each other (if these teams win it would match up St Joes vs St Amant and Barbe vs Acadiana and Chapelle vs Dominican, all district opponents) If the brackets were set up evenly then a dominant district would have the opportunity to have a final 4 from that district and not have to eliminate each other early on. Also I agree with daddyo (hard to believe!!) about eliminating the travel rules. Barbe has yet to play a team north of I-10 and I would love to see some of the north LA teams

I am definitely on the same page with you barbedad20 on that one. I would love to see more south teams playing north teams in the playoffs and try to prevent intra-district games early in the playoffs.

One way to keep from seeing in district rivals too early may be to seed top four teams from each district. If a district has only three teams or the fourth place team from a district choose not to participate start drawing from the best 5th place records until all slots are filled. If it means a 5th place team from a district meets an in district rival early, oh well. seems like with 8 districts the whole playoff schedule for 1st round matchups would be out there for everyone to see at the beginingof the year. Thusly if a fourth place team was going to have to travel a great distance they could inform LHSAA well in advance that they wish to withdraw from the playoffs early, and another 5th place team could be inserted in their place. Just a thought

Ditto congrats to Caddo Magnet. This game came as a bit of a shock to me from the standpoint that Magnet kind of made St. Joe's play on their heels, which I didn't expect. Great effort by Magnet, and glad I got to see them play, especially since I don't get to see many teams from that area. Impressive passing and quickness, kept St. Joe's seemingly guessing.

Terrebonne 2 - Chapelle 1 ----------------------------- Hard fought game by both teams. 0-0 halftime. Terrebonne took a 1-0 lead on a great finish by Kandice Champagne. Chapelle scored in the 40th minute on a game ending corner kick. Terrebonne's goalie caught the ball on the fly and was knocked in the goal after a collision between players from both teams. Questionable call but no arguement from the Terrebonne coaches. It appeared Terrebonne got a second wind in the overtime and played the way everyone expected and controlled the overtime periods. Mindy Fanguy put the game away on assist from Champagne with 7 minutes left in the second 10 min. period.
Chapelle came to play and played right up to the end. This is not sour grapes directed at Chapelle because I don't think they have any control over the field but a high school play off game should not be played on a U-15 rec size field. The field was too small for either team to spread out and play. Terrebonne's ability to spread the field and utilize their speed was completely shut down by the size of the field. I assume Chapelle could say the same. It was a shame to see the teams so limited. Was this due to the storm or is this their normal field?
Bottom line is both teams played hard and their schools can be proud.

Byrd 5 West Monroe 0
Byrd scored the first three shots they had..very hard to overcome that! Impressive win tonight by Byrd...they were by far the better team tonight. Best of luck to them in the next round. They will be hard to beat if the game is at INDY stadium.

Lafayette 2 St. Amant 1 PKs Played at the "PIT" which is named correctly wore out grass, sand and a turtle back that would make a red ear slider proud. St. Amant scored first on a high bouncing ball that was headed inover the keeper's head mid way thru the first period. Lafayette came back to finally get one in past a very good goalie with 26 min left in the second period. Two 10 min. and Two 5 min. sudden death periods it was still tied. On the PK LHS first shot was blocked but the ST. Amant bounced it off the post. the next 4 LHS shooters hit net but one of the Gators sent it high I felt the first half was even but that LHS had the edge in the second and OT periods. The small size of the field cramped Lafayette's style. LHS missed a couple of chances to score. At this level of play you best score on every chance cause they don't come too often. Any game that goes to PKs could have gone either way. The Ref's were clueless and missed so many calls on both sides it was sad.
