The LHSAA needs to take a look at changing the number of teams that make the playoffs. Some of the 4th and 5th place teams have no business being in the playoffs. I know with some districts having only 2 or 3 teams allows for some teams making the playoffs and they have no business being there. The LHSAA needs to cut down on the number of teams and they also need to be seeded.
Take the Lafayette and Captain Shreve game last night. That game should have never taken place. Shreve travels three hours spends a lot of money and is beaten 10-0 and Lafayette High is missing 2 starters. It could have easily been 15-0. Give the top teams a bye and shrink the number of teams in bracket.
What can be done to help solve this problem?

The score may have been one sided but the Lady's from Capt. Shreve never walked, bickered, or quit playing> Well Done Capt. Shreve. I do not have an answer to fixing the playoffs. If you rank team and just take the top 16... who is going to do the ranking? The wide variance between the districts and the depth of or lack there of in each district creates this problem. Some teams that finish third in a district may be a better team than the champion in another district. There is not an easy fix. I wish they would change the wording in the bylaws that states where the state championship will be held"...in the New Orleans area". and only Div I and III. Why not have a true championship event with all 3 girls games playing on one day and the 3 boys games following the next day. Put is out for bid like basket ball and baseball etc and just take the best offer.

If you cut back on the number of teams to 2 in each district you will still have teams that don't deserve to be in. Better to have 1 too many than leave out a deserving team. We got beat bad last night, but we have a young team that will be better because of it. The girls got out of some classes, got to ride a charter bus, and had a good experience overall. Losing badly isn't the end of the world. Looking at the scores, there were several other routs. The best teams will be there in the end. Good Luck to all!!

I am not sure what the best answer is but I think if it mirrored how football is done it would be better. They need to seed the teams (I know easier said than done). I agree just because you win district doesn't mean you should be in the playoffs. There are several districts where the 4th or 5th place team is better than the district champ of another. I think maybe New Iberia (3-5) has a chance against Terrebonne and maybe they will prove me wrong but look at the 5 games that were played with 4th and 5th place teams. They were beaten by a combined score of 39-1.

Do not sell Terrebonne short!
I have coached against their coach in club ball and those girls can play. Don't penalize a district champ by the quality of the 3rd - 5th place teams. A district champ who is undefeated should be at least competitive with most if not all 3rd place teams of even the most deep district.

I am not selling Terrebonne short. I think NI is the only 5th place team that has a chance in the 1st round. My point is that Shreve and some of the others didn't deserve to be in the playoffs. I know the rules said they did but I will let the results speak for themselves. This isn't T-ball where everybody gets to play, a trophy and we don't keep score.

The disparity been the different teams in different District should not be the reason to decide who can rightfully go and who should not to the playoffs. Each team wants to hope they can be the giant killer someday. Woodlawn finished 4th in District 4 last year, went to face Comeaux where they got smashed last year 7-0 or so. This year in spite of a 4-8 record in District and a 5th place finish they would have proudly gone out and given their best effort and walked off the field proudly even though they finished the season with only 10 players healthy enough to play. That is what this competition should be about. If Lafayette, Fountainebleau Baton Rouge, etc. is that much better than their opponent send out some of your freshman or reserves to get the experience they may need later in the playoffs if an injury occurs. Or just to get them ready for next year. Openning the playoffs up to everyone would hardly be a blip since the top teams then could get that precious bye. Ranking teams could solve some of these problems but it is hard to say if the shreveport teams should be ranked higher or lower than the New Orleans tams when very few people see them both to know which is actually better. Do you want ot rank teams based on last years preformance? Seniors graduate. How about how many club player are on each team, Hmm, some areas won't have any club team players, better toss them out of the mix. so far none of the highly ranked teams have fallen, set's see if that holds true tonight, when the girls finishup round one.

I can remember in the 2000-01 playoffs, Mt. Carmel finished third in their district behind Dominican and Chapelle and entered the playoffs as a wild card team. In the playoffs Mt. Carmel advanced to the finals after winning playoff games against two ranked opponents, (BRHS #2 in Bi-District play and Northshore #3 in the semifials). Mt Carmel then played unbeaten and then-ranked #1 Caddo Magnet in the finals. Mt. Carmel won state that year 1-0 in overtime. Can a wild card team make it to and win the state finals? Yes! Is it likely? No, but it can happen.

That is the joy of playing the game. Otherwise what's the point just let the top two teams in the polls meet at the end of the season ala NCAA Div I Football. Them all fans could converge on one field and see who is the best team.
Please don't take this as a serious suggestion!

Yes a WC team could win state but look at that Mt. Carmel team that did. Since Mt. Carmel was that good they should have been in the ranking somewhere. How many teams went to the playoffs in 2001? I think there were byes for district champs back then and look a QUALITY WC won state. There is room to have quality WC teams in the bracket but you should not compare this years Shreve's team to a 2001 Mt. Carmel WC team. There is no comparison.

I wasn't comparing MCA to Shreve. I don't know anything about Shreve other than they finished fifth in their district.
You say that MCA should have been ranked because they were that good but who knew how "good" MCA was at the time the playoffs began? MCA's won lost record wasn't all that impressive in 2000-01. MCA lost all their district games to Dominican and Chapelle that year plus a number of other regular season games. In my opinion they didn't deserve to be ranked even though rankings don't mean anything anyway. But MCA, at the right time of the year, did play hardnosed defense in the playoffs and took advantage of every scoring opportunity that arose.
Would anyone have have given any consideration much less picked MCA to win state that year based on their wild card entry? Probably not (unless you were a parent of one of the players. By the way, I am a parent of one of those former players). The point of this thread is that even a wild card team has the chance to make the finals . But as my final sentence in the above posting states: "Can a wildcard team make it to and win the state finals? Yes! Is it likely? No, but it can happen." I only make that statement because it DID happen but acknowledge that it is unlikely that it will happen again.
I can't say which teams in which districts were more deserving of wildcard spots than teams in another district. But if you look at each district: Dist. 1 had 2 out of 7 teams not make the playoffs, Dist. 2 had all 3 teams make it; Dist. 3 had 3 of 8 not make playoffs; Dist. 4 and Dist. 5 each had 3 of 7 not make it; Dist. 6 had 3 of 6 not make it; Dist. 7 had 2 of 7 not make it and Dist. 8 had 1 of 4 not make it. But based on the criteria for determining a wild card entry this looks pretty equitable.

Terrible weather in Shreveport for the Caddo Magnet/Comeaux game! Almost 1.50 inches of rain have fallen, but the game will still be played. Who knows what the end result will be since the teams are expected to play on a field that will surely be pure mud by game time.

Terrebonne 2 - New Iberia 0 Game moved to 5:15 start to dodge the rain. Got the entire game in with no rain. 1-0 at the half. Well played game by both teams. Terrebonne had 2 goals called back by very close calls. The earlier post listing New Iberia as a possible 5 seed moving on was a good post. New Iberia is a very athletic team with heart. They came to play and never quit. Players and fans represented their school well.

I have to agree with sosoplayer24. I'm expecting alot from New Iberia next year. Hopefully they will use this as a steping stone in building a stronger girls soccer program at NISH. Props to all the players who played with all they had and left it on the field, to all the fans that traveled to support the team ( even with all the crazy events of the day { NISH-that day not only with the game moved up 2 hours but there was a bomb threat at the school which made it harder to communicate with players, parents, teachers, coaches and students }). I also give the coaches credit for the season. Great season for the Jackets and I'm sure this is not the last time we will see the Lady Jackets in the post season.

sportfan, I think you are completely off base by saying that some of the 4th and 5th place teams don't belong in the playoffs, regardless of what they do against the team they are put up against. If you truly love the sport, then appreciate all aspects of it. Definitely some of the 4th place teams in Div I could beat the district champions from other districts. The pairings do make a difference and give advantage to some district champions by pairing them with some weaker 4th seeds. However, after watching several games during the season, involving several teams in and around the Lafayette to New Orleans area, I can add a few view points on some of these 4th place teams you want to "not be included". Without a doubt, I would place Fontainebleau on a spot above the rest of the division I teams due to their quickness, speed, attack capability, and depth off of the bench. After a gap difference, I would place in teams like Lafayette, BRHS, Acadiana, and possibly Mandeville. Then another small gap and place Mt. Carmel, St. Amant, and St. Joseph's. Then come the rest. Now as an example, Dutchtown gets pitted against Fontainebleau in the first round, the young Dutchtown team doesn't stand much of a chance against the style of play of Fontainebleau, but this same team can fight to the wire with a St. Amant, St. Joe's, and BRHS. So change the scenario and pit a team like Dutchtown (4th place in their district) against one of the other district champs, and you may be looking at Dutchtown playing in the 2nd round of the playoffs. Same can possibly be said for a team like Covington or Airline (who had to face BRHS and West Monroe respectively). If I had to guess, I would say that Fontainebleau, BRHS, Lafayette, and Acadiana could end up being your final 4 teams, but as the gap narrows between teams it can always end up with a surprise. My point is basically that it is not fair for you to say that a team does not belong in the playoffs because they are a 4th place team in their district. Some districts, such as District 4 this year had 3 ranked teams all season (one at #1 & #2 BRHS, one at #5 - 9 St. Amant, one at #5-9 St. Joesph's). That doesn't mean that teams #4 and #5 in that district couldn't have competed against district champs from another division. Last point I will make, is that regardless of the outcome of a matching between a WC and a district champion, the experience for the team's players is well worth the effort.

If you don't think 4 and 5's belong in the playoff look at District 3. This district sent 5 teams to the playoffs and if you ask Terrebonne (a number 1 seed) that battled to a 2-0 win against our 5th place team New Iberia, or Caddo Magnet (a number 1 seed) that had to come back from a 2-0 defecit at half to win 3-2 against Comeaux, or ask Central Lafourche (a number 2 seed) that drew Barbe and lost 4-2 I think all 3 teams will tell you that all three 3-5 seeds from District 3 belong in the playoffs. I know not all districts are as well represented with their 3,4 and 5 seeds as District 3 but if you left out all 4 and 5 seeds you wouldn't have had any interesting first round games. If New Iberia played in any district besides District 3 they would have easily been a 2 or 3 seed. I can safely say that NO number 1 seed would beat either Barbe, Comeaux, or New Iberia 10-0 like many 1st round games ended up. I truly belive that District 3 (Lafayette, Acadiana, Barbe, Comeaux, and New Iberia) is as strong as they are because they get great competition against each other each week. Even our #6 team Carencro would have put up a better game than many of these 3 and 4 seeds losing 8,9,or 10 to 0. Just my rambling opinion.
