With the signing day this Wednesday I was wandering who is going where. I will start.
Barbe has 8 seniors and 5 have verbally committed to play college soccer.
Poopsie (center mid) has committed to McNeese. Anne (defender) has committed to Mississippi College. Lolly (center mid) has committed to Hendrix College (Arkansas). Kim (center mid) has committed to LSU-Shreveport. Anna (forward/current keeper) has been talking with Mississippi College (I don't think she has committed yet). Says alot for the Barbe Soccer program when 5 girls are moving on to play at the next level.

The girl going to Hendrix is lucky. They just constructed a REALLY nice athletic complex there which includes a very nice soccer field.

I wonder why/how Centenary is considered Division I since they have such a small population of students. Do you have an idea lcpsoccermom?

Student population has nothing to do with Division I status. Number of sports for men and women and money are two key criteria of playing Division I. Women's soccer roster at Centenary is inconsistant year to year...win/loss record consistant

Here is what I found on their website: NCAA Division I: Centenary is the smallest Division I school in the nation. Centenary competes against other Division I schools in volleyball, soccer, gymnastics, basketball, cross country, baseball, golf, tennis, softball, and swimming.

Of the 4 seniors from Lafayette High that start - Chelsea Granger has verbally committed to Centenary in Shreveport and Erin Burney has verbally committed to Northwestern State. The other two have had offers but are not sure if their academic plan will allow them to continue to play soccer. (Hopefully my sources are reliable ones)

I'm not sure what an inconsistent roster is year to year, but they had some good wins last year. Their best was when they beat Texas University 1-0. Their coach is my son's select coach and he is a great teacher. I think Centenary gets forgotten about when kids are thinking about playing soccer in college. In addition, they have the only Div1 program for men in LA. And I don't think population has any more to do with Div I status in college than it does in High school soccer divisions. Congratulations to all the girls going on to play college ball.

I have to agree with you lcpsoccermom. Chase is an excellent coach and Centenary is very strong academically as well. I know it is on my daughters short list.

Women's soccer roster at Centenary is inconsistant year to year...win/loss record consistant Centenary has been D1 for a long time. The only real successful programs they have had in the last 10 years has been softball, baseball and gymnastics. They are now in a conference that makes no sense for them and requires the teams to travel all the way to North Dakota. It would make much more sense for them to go D3 and get in a conference with Millsaps, Rhodes and other schools of similar size. Most, but not all of the higher ups at Centenary would like to go D3 but money talks and there are some major athletic donors who do not want to do this. Time will tell as to who wins out. In D3 Centenary could actually have a chance to compete for titles. Thats not really the case now.

Excellent post ShreveDad! I live in the area and had the chance to attend a few Centenary soccer games. I agree with you D3 would be a better fit for Centenary. Centenary played Texas State early in the season not Texas University (?). Check the number of returning players for the inconsistency. I am certainly rooting for a strong Centenary athletic program. It would be great for the area and the state.

sorry-Texas State University -you're right. And D-3 would be a much better fit. But whatever Division, it still gets overlooked when talking about soccer programs in the state. Being from New Orleans and now living in Shreveport, kids in NO barely know it exists, and that's a shame.

I go to centenary and play on the men's team and I will say centenary is a very strong academic school, and when you miss many days for traveling long distances, it is very hard to balance school and soccer. Last year we had 3 or 4 home games and 13 away games. Also I'm pretty sure they have talked about going D3 for many years, but I don't see it happening anytime soon. Also I think that if it went D3 many student/athletes would leave, because you will lose your athletic scholarship. Any students leaving will not be good for the school right now due to a decrease in enrollment in the last years.
