If we rank DI teams according to the Power Ranking, the list will be: 1. Jesuit (1) 13 0 0 2. Brother Martin (1) 8 0 2 3. Carencro (1) 6 1 0 4. Lafayette (1) 6 1 1 5. Fountainebleau (1) 8 1 0 6. Dutchtown (1) 7 0 2 7. Shreve (1) 10 3 1 8. Grace King (1) 3 0 2 9. Ruston (1) 5 3 0 10. St. Paul's (1) 6 4 0 You can definitely tell that these rankings are starting to get more accurate. Like you pointed out, it seems to favor teams from North LA. However, it definitely has some bright spots. The power rankings confirm Jesuit and Br. Martin at #1 and #2 respectively. Lafayette is just one spot behind its LA Prep Poll rank of #3. The Power Rankings correctly placed 7 of the Top 10 teams from the LA Prep Poll in the Top 10. St. Paul's is starting to ascend, at #14 overall as opposed to #33 earlier in the season. All of the teams in the Power Ranking Top 10 received votes in the LA Prep Poll except Ruston (#9 in the Power Rankings). It looks like this thing is definitely getting more reliable. Great work flat3. If this system continues to get more accurate, which it should, it would be great to be able to proposed it for actual use. This week will be important to see how these rankings continue to develop. We get to see several high profile matchups and will be able to see how much these games affect a team's position in the Power Rankings. Jesuit vs. Rummel St. Paul's vs. Fontainebleau Lafayette vs. Dutctown Carencro vs. Dutchtown Dutchtown vs. Teurlings Catholic

I hope you are correct on your assessment though I may not be that optimistic. Look at DII and DIII. Their Power Ratings don't even resemble LaPrep polls. It's been a problem and it will be. There is a new issue coming up recently; games vs. teams outside LA. Rummel fell out of Power Rating Top 10 this week due to their three losses to MS teams. Without these losses, they would have been ahead of Grace King at #8. If we don't count St. Louis' six games against teams outside LA, they would be ranked between Dutchtown and Shreve. Yes, loss is a loss so that it should count. The problem is that we often don't know their opponents' records. I looked for websites of St. Thomas, Nolan Catholic, etc. Many Catholic schools in TX I found the websites, and for most public school in MS, no luck. When I couldn't find any team's record, I assume they have 50 winning %. This is probably underestimate (after all, these are schools which play in Showcases), hurting LA schools who played them (Rummel, St. Louis, etc.). Otherwise, I feel better with DI. GK will be out of Top 10 after their 0-3 loss to BR, and this is how most pollsters were voting....

Well, I think that the out of state games shouldn't be factored into the Power Rankings at all, at least not if we want to make it an accurate system. I agree that there should be some way to factor it in, but for the purposes of possibly sending this system to the LHSAA, I think it would be better to include only the games between Louisiana teams.

Thanks again, dbeasely17. If that's the consensus, I will eliminate any results against teams outside LA. It is very easy for me to do. It is also easy for me to reinstate them. I would like to get some inputs from other people, though.

I agree with beasley. You have no way of power rating the out of state teams and thus loose the dynamic nature of the system when they are included.

I agree with eliminating out of state teams from the system, however it does hurt the teams that played well.. I.E. C. Lafourche posted 2 wins against very good quality teams, but wont receive credit for it. Same with STM if im not mistaken.
However, you could make it where the quality of oppenant would be stronger, but that would give the edge to teams who play out of state, and you would want to encourage the teams to play in state, therefore its a lose/lose situation.

Especially a lose lose for the higher quality teams that do travel to the bigger tournaments in texas and florida. Lets just make the power rating nation wide then that will solve all our problems. LOL

Starting 12/17, Power Rating will not include results of any games against teams outside LA. There are two reasons. For one, we can't determine their win/loss % for most teams. For another, including these games ends up punishing those LA teams who venture out of state to play worthy opponents. This shouldn't happen. Here are changes in Power Rating scores among some teams. The first score is before the change (including games vs out-of-state schools) and the second after the change. As you see, few schools get hurt by this change and only little. Some schools (St. Louis, Rummel, EA, and Vandy) will benefit from this change. Jesuit: 17.60 -> 17.23 St. Louis: 10.91 -> 14.26 Rummel: 11.72 -> 13.94 C. Lafourche: 9.75 -> 10.12 St. Thomas M.: 11.84 -> 11.69 E. Ascension: 10.66 -> 11.94 Vandebilt: 8.02 -> 9.47

Ascension: 10.66 -> 11.94 Vandebilt: 8.02 -> 9.47 Judging by some of the numbers that you have here, I would venture to say that you found some of the records from some of the teams in the Texas tournaments, but could find little or no results for teams in the Mississippi Showcase. My reason for saying this is that Jesuit beat some teams that are usually pretty strong in Texas and you were likely able to find some of their records. This would probably give Jesuit a higher Power Ranking because the teams that play in that high profile tournament are usually very good teams. In any case, they are probably better than the 50% win/loss record that you were assuming for the schools on which you could find no data. Whereas that helped Jesuit, it hurt Rummel, Vandy, etc. My guess is that you couldn't find any of the records for these Mississippi teams. I would be willing to bet that the majority of them, if not all of them, are above the 50% win/loss percentage. Not having their records would actually hurt the LA teams that played them since we are assuming a 50% when there are no records available. My guess is that the teams Rummel and Vandy played were good, solid teams. Thus, I don't think that Rummel and Vandy should be penalized so heavily, especially since the rest of LA doesn't get a chance to play these teams. While I do think that the games should have some relevance, I can't seem to think of a way of inputting that into the Power Rankings unless we have some good info on the out of state teams. To penalize our teams for playing good competition doesn't seem productive. And for all intents and purposes of "Power Ranking" teams from LA, it doesn't make a whole lot of sense to give so much weight to out of state games. At least not when the majority of the out of state teams that we play are very good teams. If we don't have their records, it really hurts to have a poor result against them if they are included in the formula. Sorry, for the rambling, just my $.02.

Also, interesting to notice is that Rummel would be in the Top 10 for DI schools if the out of state games are not included...

This is exactly the problem with the out of state games. We just don't have enough information on these teams (i.e. records, etc.) to make an objective number to put into the formula. The thing with using just LA teams is that all of the teams play teams that play other teams that play other teams in LA. This really helps to balance things out in the long run. Throwing in out of state teams can definitely send this out of whack quickly. Not for a lot of teams, but it could affect a select few teams a lot. The problem is these teams are usually going to be teams on the upper end of the spectrum (i.e. Vandy, Rummel, etc.) because they tend to venture to out of state tournaments more than some of the weaker teams.

Seems to be fairly accurate to me and getting more so from week to week. Because your formula uses cold hard facts (i.e. wins or losses) you see teams like Pontchatoula in there. I don't think anyone would vote on Pontchatoula as a Top 10 team. The teams that have played in a lot of tournaments seem to be ranked pretty accurately because they play other top teams from around the state. Teams like Pontchatoula are ranked high because they play a very weak pre-district and don't go to a whole lot of tournaments. However, they also haven't played that game against Fontainebleau yet, which should even out their ranking. I believe the game is rescheduled for Monday.

Top 11, 12 or 15 for each division based on Power Ratings are as follows. It's interesting when you compare this list to LaPrep Top 10.
Division I 1 17.93 Jesuit (1) 18 0 0 2 14.91 Carencro (1) 11 2 3 3 14.74 Brother Martin (1) 11 1 7 4 14.63 Fountainebleau (1) 13 2 1 5 14.09 Caddo (1) 14 3 1 6 13.98 Lafayette (1) 11 4 3 7 13.92 Shreve (1) 12 4 2 8 13.53 Rummel (1) 10 3 1 9 13.15 Acadiana (1) 9 4 3 10 12.74 C. Lafourche (1) 10 4 1 11 12.72 Ruston (1) 9 5 1 12 12.66 Ponchatoula (1) 11 5 0 13 12.56 Dutchtown (1) 9 4 4 14 12.54 St. Paul's (1) 10 7 0 15 12.40 Catholic (1) 8 3 4 Other than #10, it's almost a mirror image of the LaPrep Top 10. Just like the LaPrep, Carencro took over Brother Martin's by a slim margin for the #2 spot.
Division II 1 13.42 St. Th. More (2) 10 3 3 2 13.00 E. Ascension (2) 9 4 0 3 12.79 Parkway (2) 12 5 0 4 12.53 DeRidder (2) 14 4 3 5 11.76 Tara (2) 8 4 0 6 11.73 Neville (2) 11 5 3 7 11.60 Lee (2) 10 4 1 8 11.31 Pineville (2) 8 5 2 9 11.22 Alexandria (2) 9 5 2 10 10.89 Vandebilt Cath. (2) 7 8 1 11 10.61 St. Michael (2) 6 4 2 Parkway and Pineville are not in the LaPrep Top 10 ("Northern advantage" in Power Ratings). Ben Franklin is #10 in LaPrep and #16 in Power Ratings (PR=7.92). Division III 1 15.83 Teurlings (3) 18 0 2 2 15.23 St. Louis (3) 10 1 2 3 14.46 St. Frederick (3) 8 2 0 4 13.06 Newman (3) 9 4 4 5 12.30 Opelousas Cath.
