Power Ratings as of Jan. 14. You need to play six games to be ranked. There was little change in Top 25. Teams that went up in rankings for 5 or more spots (up to Top 60): Vandebilt Cath. (+10), St. Michael (+5), University (+8), St. Martin's (+10), Westminster (+6), Ben Franklin (+14).
Teams that went down: S. Terrebonne (-19), Woodlawn (-6), Neville (-7), Pineville (-5), Grace King (-5), East St. John (-7), Covington (-5), East Jefferson (-9). We can see that some perrenial top 5 teams (Vandy, University, St. Martin's, BF) are moving up. This Power Rating formula is getting pretty darn good as the season matures, and I bet that if a formula could be factored in that would recognize teams that play in tournaments then a lot of teams that seem to get undue favor (mainly N. La. teams) wouldn't look so out of place. Calculate a power rating for each tournament based on the teams involved, and use that number to boost the rating on teams that actually participate in tournaments. If teams don't enter tournaments or stay away from the tougher S. La. tournaments it would be less likely to get the rating of those that do.

It's an interesting idea, and I think mrdashriprock is correct. At this moment, however, I don't know exactly how to do this. Besides, it'll be highly subjective. When I looked at the list one more time, there were only four N. La schools who may be rated with "undue favor" but didn't play any tournament in south LA. They are St. Fred, Parkway, Ruston, and Ouachita. As long as the Power Ratings are based on "objective" criteria, we have to go with their ratings. If we made playoff brackets according to the current Power Ratings, St. Fred. (#3 in DIII) would play Episcopal (#6) in the quarterfinal, and Parkway (#3 in DII) would play Vandy (#6) also in the quarter. We can then let them decide if they deserve these high rankings.

The 4 teams from N. La that you mentioned wouldn't last a week in South La.

I beg to differ. I think that 3 of those 4 teams that you mentioned (St. Freds, Ruston, Parkway) could hang with a good amount of teams from South LA. Now we couldn't hang with Jesuit, Brother Martin, Rummel, St. Thomas More, Lafayette, Acadiana, Carencro, Teurlings, St. Louis..basically the top 5 teams in each division. With the exception of D1 (which I don't think we could hang with many of the top 10 teams in D1), I think we could hang with the bottom half of the top 10 in D2 or D3.

now im sure when you say south la you mean teams like jesuit. but dont forget that there are alot of crappy teams down there too. its not like everybody below alexandria = national team level skill. i would agree most teams up here couldnt contend with jesuit and them. but i'd take parkway, ruston, caddo, shreve, byrd, and a few others over a good bit of teams down south

First off, I didn't say those four teams couldn't hang on with teams in the south. I know they could. The problem with Power Ratings is that northern teams get rated too high, even if they can hang on with great teams. St. Fred. is a good example. They are definitely in Top 10 in DIII. They can "hang on" with any DIII teams. Their Power Rating is, however, too high. At 14.31 with the record of 8-2, they are ranked #8 OVERALL, above Lafayette, Rummel, and Shreve. This is because St. Fred. didn't play any Top 10 teams except DeRidder (1-2 loss). Their other loss is to Ruston (1-6). If they played in any tournament in the south, they would have played more top 10 teams. They could have beaten a few, but would have lost a few as most teams do in any tournament. Parkway is another example. At 14-5, they are ranked #16 OVERALL and #3 in DII. None of the 14 wins they had is over top 10 teams. They are ranked #10 in DII in LaPrep. I didn't mean to bash teams in the north. I just wish they could come to tournaments in the south as Caddo and Shreve did. Caddo beat St. Paul's, Baton Rouge, and Vandy to show they are really good. Good luck everyone with the rest of the season!

I should have made myself clear. When I say 'south', I do mean the usual suspects - Jesuit, Lafayette, Carencro, Acadiana, STM, Teurlings, St.Louis, Vandy. I think for some of the I-20 teams to be taken seriously, they will have to come down south more often and win some games. Until then, we will have conversations like this. North La is at a disadvantage because of the lack of Select programs up there and I don't mean Rec+. I mean Premier, travel the whole South kind of programs. There will always be one or two teams that make some noise, but not on a consistent basis.
And chill is right - there are a lot of bad teams down south, especially in DII.

caddo has shown what teams up here can do. most programs up here dont have the money to drive down south to 3 or 4 tournaments down there to show they can hang. shreve played caddo tight. byrd has been playing as well as anybody up here. st. freds isnt as strong as the power ranking gives them but they are good.
and shreveport is the only place on the I-20 area with premier. and i know what you mean by select. i travel to practice from monroe to shreveport twice a week for 2 years to do it. rec + isnt that bad tho. it still helps people get more games which is more then people not playing get. its not like people up here have the advantages as down south. new orleans and baton rouge and even laf. have a bigger soccer population then up here. football throws everything off up here. all the kids that play soccer as kids go to that because its what their dads did or its what everybody else does. the south is where odp meets. did that. it helps but people up here either dont hear about it or they dont want to travel once a month. plus they hear they arent as good and dont feel like making the trip.
the only difference from up north and down south is competition level and probably opportunity. other then that the top teams from up north can compete withs of the top teams from down south but not the highest yet. but maybe one day they will

Power Ratings as of 1/21 Since coachray40 did not update his "results" thread, the Win-Loss # numbers below may be a a little off. They don't include scrimmages, jamborees, vs. JV, or vs. non-LA teams. If your record doesn't agree with mine, please PM me the list of results.

Top teams in each division. Voting Caroncro over Jesuit for #1 is not justified. Not including St. Thomas Aquinas in Top III is also difficult to defend.
