Haha, I don't know what you're thinking about. Brennan is by far the best keeper in Shreveport/Bossier no doubt, but he can be scored on, just like any keeper. Airline won't be able to stop Magnet's midfield or attackers so I'm pretty sure Magnet takes this one.
Magnet wins 3-0.

Magnet/Airline game was not as close as the 5-0 score indicated. First half was complete domination by Magnet, 10-12 shots and could not get one in. Several misfires and some great saves by Airline's keeper. He really is as good as advertised, and if there had been any other keeper in District One playing for them tonite, it would easily have been 10-0. He pretty much played the last third of the field himself, anticipating through balls by Magnet and beating the attackers to the ball, like a sweeper. He was Wimer-esque.
EJ got a soft red right before half time, and even though his absence hurt Magnet, since it was a soft red, Magnet did not have to play a man down. Somehow first half ends 0-0.
Second half starts and the dam bursts early. About a minute in a corner kick is headed in for a goal and then several more follow in rapid succession. Lots of substitutions after that and a few more goals for Magnet.
Magnet's players moved the ball around exceptionally well. They also move around brilliantly into the passing lanes when they don't have the ball. The defense is a very cohesive unit that plays the passing lanes well and prevents the counterattack. Airline did not have a single shot on goal the whole match.
For Magnet, Steven Bush and Adam West scored 2 each and Jordan Mitchell (Scott's younger brother) got the final one on a beautifully served ball by Zach Kelly, in which Jordan went one v one with the keeper and chipped him.
Coach Radi Baltov has done a fantastic job with this team. They are going to continue surprising people all year.

In the Shreve-Byrd game, Bennet Bynum really picked up the slack caused by Shreve's midfield and really kept them into the game all the way till overtime. Also Tyler Smith, a freshman started at left back and really played solid considering he has never played in a true high school environment until now. Good win by Byrd, they kept it really close and pulled out the win in OT which was heartbreaking for Shreve but we will just have to pick it up. Also Bynum was playing with a broken rib and played like a beast and Paxton Monsour with an injured ankle.

Good match for a season opener. Shreve had its chances, Bynum in goal had a huge night. ON both Byrd goals he stopped dead on shots but Shreve failed to clear the rebound and Byrd put them in. Shreve plays a bunch of young kids who will take some lumps this year but should get better and better as the season progresses. Tough loss for the Shreve kids but there is plenty of time to bounce back.
Gonna be an exciting year in District 1.

Sounds like the Byrd-Shreve game was a lot of fun to watch. I figured it would be close.
It looks like district is a three team race. I think Magnet is probably playing the best at this stage of the season but Byrd has the first big win. There will be several big games involving these three teams and it should make for some exciting soccer.

Magnet played almost identically to last week's scrimmage with Neville. The first half seemed to be played in slow motion with Magnet dominating but resulting in a 0 to 0 halftime score. The second half started with Magnet swarming all over the place and simply overpowering their opponent, and within 20 minutes most starters were spectators. With senior striker Eric Johnson being tossed in the first half the super sophs took over the scoring duties with all five goals and three assists coming from this group with the other assist coming from a freshman. Almost half of Magnet's roster is sophomores but you wouldn't know it from their play. They all play with such confidence and ability. Possession and ball movement continue to be the key to this team's early success. Magnet's defense will get it's first real test in a couple of weeks as Byrd brings maybe the strongest set of attacking midfielders and strikers in the city. Should be a great match.

Here is the link to the Shreveport Times article on the Byrd - Shreve match. shreveporttimes.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20061114/SPORTS01/611140316/1001/SPORTSBe interesting to see who will take over as the main scoring threat for Shreve. They lost 3 of their top 4 scorers and last night the 4th was in street clothes. John will be back for Ruston this weekend if they need him. Coach needs to decide where he will help the team most. Shreve has a bunch of 9th and 10 graders who are more talented at their age than the guys who just graduated were. But when almost half of the all-city team walks out the door, it may take a while to find out who can do what to most help the team. I also have to give Magnet the nod as district favorite as of now. They haven't played a real strong team to date so we will see how their defense will stand up when they do. There should be some real close matches between Magnet, Byrd and Shreve this year. I will be very surprised to see anybody run the table this year. Congrats to Magnet and Byrd on big wins last night. Also well done to Shreve. They just need to keep working hard and things will be just fine.

No, John did not play. Sure could have used him. His dad said last night's match was the only one he should miss.

Well, when you are wrong, you are wrong. And me, I was wrong about opening night. Nothing like going 0-2 on opening night on predictions. Congrats first to Byrd on their great win. Maybe the stigma of early season rust has finally worn off. They got that early season win over Shreve last year in the Parkway Tournament and then lost when it counted in district play. Sounds like Coach Aguilar has his boys on the right path. As for Magnet, 5-0 is impressive. I didn't think they would get 3, let alone 5 passed Brennan, but once again I was wrong. We all knew these kids coming up that Radi has been coaching for years were good, but we kept hearing they were too small to be truly competitive. It's a tough loss for my boys back in Bossier I know. But, give credit where it is due. Magnet obviously wasn't going to make the same mistake last year when they faced Airline in the last game of the regular season. I'll be interested to see how both teams respond later in the week with their next games.

As for Magnet, 5-0 is impressive. I didn't think they would get 3, let alone 5 passed Brennan... Brennan played a whale of a game, but in the end there were just too many coming at him from too many angles. Most of the goals came from very short-range shots sent in from the sides. He only gave up one from straight on, and that was towards the end when the outcome was certain. Magnet has 10 to 12 players on current 1st place select teams, so defenses are going to have a difficult time protecting their goal no matter who the keeper is when they're hitting on all cylinders. And by the way, everyone talks about Kirkpatrick (all true), but as the season rolls on Byrd's Justin Barnes will be getting noticed, too. He had an outstanding fall premier season. And Shreve's keeper Bennett Bynum playing that well with a broken rib is very impressive. Lots of talent in net this year for Shreveport-Bossier.

I watched the Airline goalie warm up and did not think for one second that Caddo would score that many goals on him...Congrats Caddo..

5 on Airline's keeper is really impressive, seems that Caddo should take district this year. Who are the better players on each team? Any new talented freshmen?

I haven't seen one player on this Magnet team who stands out as THE player that opponents need to watch out for. Coach Radi Baltov coaches team play with lots of ball movement, so that leaves little room for individuality. As seen in the Airline game when one of the starters came off early with a soft red they didn't lose a step. I don't think we're going to see any blow-outs though as seen elsewhere. This coach is playing everyone on the roster as soon as the game starts getting lopsided. Already fifteen different names have goals and/or assists. That's because all the midfielders and forwards (incl non-starters) are getting lots of touches. The defense hasn't really been tested yet, but there's no reason to believe they won't come through. They're all returners, and with a senior and two juniors usually starting in the back four this is the most experienced section of the group. Of course it's very early in the season, but they've only given up one goal so far, and that was in a 7 to 1 jamboree game with those guys sitting. There are a couple of freshmen this year at midfield/forward who are holding their own very well, and like everyone else they're getting plenty of playing time. The Sulphur tournament will give us an idea of how this team stacks up with some of the South La. teams.

Magnet plays a good team game but our upperclassmen will be leading the way. The Senior and Junior starters from last year are Eric, Micah, Nick, and Spencer. The defense plays well together as does the midfield and the strikers are difficult to handle.
The defense hasn't really been tested but they are playing very well and deserve a lot of the credit for the fast start to the season. The defense is elder group of the team with one senior (Micah), two juniors (Spencer and Robert), and a sophmore (Luke).
The sophmores are a big part of the team this year and are really making good contributions. Three sophmores (Steven, Zach, Ethan) and one Junior (Nick) start at midfield. Steven is very difficult to handle on the wing, he's having a big year.
I think Magnet has the best freshmen player in Alex Blandin and Jordan Abdehou is playing well also. Both of these guys fit in well as team players.
Coach Radi really has them playing as a team, he's done a great job!
As far as district goes there will be some really good games between Magnet, Byrd, and Shreve.

I think Alex Blandin has to be considered for the best freshman in district 1. He doesn't start but I don't think there's a freshman in town that would start for Magnet. He does get a lot of playing time and goes in at either forward or in the midfield.
Collin Bantle (Loyola) is also very good and is being called upon to do a lot for them. I know Shreve has several freshmen playing and doing well also.

I think Robert Poole for caddo has to be considered as one of the best players in state. He is fast strong and has one of the hardest shots around. I think he is the best player in the north and has the best chance of going pro.
