Woodlawn k is good. Poised, and above all, she knows she is a k. Looks good being one too. Too bad she is a senior.

wlfrocksccrstar....i'm curious as to when you played against hope. i was in high school at that time, and i don't really remember ssa being THAT bad. we did beat them a time or two when we played them, but i just don't remember them being bad. where did you play?
hope was a very good goalkeeper. she was on my club team.
but back to the topic at hand, gks in baton rouge other than the two at brhs and val at woodlawn, i would have to say......well, i don't know. my team hasn't really "challenged" anyone.....they shoot right at the target, i mean keeper.

Tigerdawg,
I played at Slidell High from 89-92 (State runner ups in 10th and State Champs 11th, 12th).
Hope was younger than me and I used to love/hate playing them because it was always cold and I used to stand around for the entire game freezing, but I loved watching her, she was sooooooo good.
I think that SSA progressed quickly after that, they like us, were a young team, well at that time every team was a young team since the sport had only been sanctioned in like 86.
I was a lucky, and I emphasize lucky, because I had a great team that played well together and a phenomenal sweeper in Brenna Bech (still one of the greatest girls to ever play the game.
I was the goalie on the SYSA select team and Northlake team.
Maybe we played against each other ;D.
I will say that there are very few girls in HS soccer who "specialize" in the keeper position. Back then we did. I think that Valerie and the girls at BRHS are specialist players.

Watch Sam Houston in Moss Bluff and you will see a very rounded out team with a goalie that knows the field. She is fast, strong, tall and can send the ball beyond the mid field. If you look at the scores (what realy counts) you will see that very little gets past her. She also is fun to watch. One of the top I have seen.

The best GK in Div I District 4 has only two more games left in her season Why, has Baton Rouge High or St. Amant's Keepers not decided to go to Playoffs this year for some reason?

Alright I'll bite on the jibe. The best keeper in Div I District 4 doesn't play for either of those teams. If you have watched all the teams in the city this year you would know that. I'm trying to stay nice and somebody is trying to get a rise out of me. Congratulations you have succeeded.

Nothing against the Destrehan keeper (note the spelling, by the way), but she has had very little to do. The Ladycats have dominated the district and the defense in front of her has let very little get through to the goalkeeper. Possession, together with a strong defense, can make most keepers look strong.

Woodlawn GK would like to have that luxury. 24 Goals allowed on 185 shots in 11 games. Crosses and long through balls not counted as saves, only true scoring opportunities. With games left against St Amant and Baton Rouge left on the schedule she will most likely cross the 200 save plateau in 13 games. More saves than most will have in a 4 year career.

It's an interesting conundrum (word of the day - hope I use it right) that a goalie with no defense....or offense for that matter in front of her gets to claim the high number of saves that she makes as proof of her strength between the pipes, but then also gets to discredit the number of goals scored against her because again she has no defense in front of her so of course she is going to get scored on. Please believe me when I say I am a Split-log fan, I just disagree with the assessment that she is the best keeper in the Baton Rouge area or District 4 merely because she post a high number of stats. The keepers from BRHS, SJA, and STA loose out in this stat fight if only b/c even when they play each other, none of the defenses are allowing the opponent to shoot at their keeper upwards of 20 times in a game really. Not to mention the fact that Woodlawn, Walker, and Central can barley cross the midfield line when playing these teams.....yet even Walker gets to shoot on Woodlawn. Again, padding stats. Lets also throw in the fact that the keepers for these teams also get to face off against some of the best teams in the state in the pre-district season and often get goals scored on them by some of the best players in the state yet don't get to discredit those goals because they do have a team in front of them. Just the rambling thoughts of an old man on a broken system of logic.

Hey big daddy good point! I saw STA keeper make a huge save vs BRHS at BRHS. Sarah Benson shot it from what would be the top right of the box and sent it straight for the top left corner. Luquette flies across goal, gets full palm on ball, lands 3 feet past the post. I happened to see that exact same shot in the first Woodlawn vs SJA which ends up deciding the game. Those are the things that should be compared when deciding who is the best keeper.

You can say the three lowest teams from District 4 rarely cross midfield and that is true, that it does create a disparity in the number of opportunities a goalkeeper has to touch the ball. Woodlawn has played 6 games of their 11 against teams ranked in the top ten in the state. Only Dutchtown with a similar record in the District has played at least that many. Split-Log has 10 saves 1 goal and 1 assist against Central and Walker. That's not going to pat many stats, except maybe to give her 4 shutouts. Playing on a poor team is not the fault of the player. If you wish to make straight up comparisons take each of the Gk's stats from the top four team (you will obviously wind up with only 6 games) divide the goal allowed by the number of shots taken on them against those opponents. This will at least allow you to compare apples to apples. Now ask your self does each keeper come off there line to cleanup through balls at the feet of a charging opponent. How are crosses and corner kicks coming into front of the goalmouth. Is the keeper in command of the back four in front of her. A good Goal keeper make saves look easy and does not go sprawling across the face of the goal. As to playing high level games outside of the District the only ones I see listed are Parkview Baptist against St Joes, St Amant versus Sacred Heart and Baton Rouge playing Redemptorist These account for a lose and a draw. Parkview will win there district, Redemptorist could wind up third in a four team district and Sacred Heart is in a three team district there for will most likely go to the playoffs even if they don't make the playoffs. I do believe BRHS lost earlier in the season to a team from the north-shore. Finally if you don't think playing on a good team doesn't make a GK look good, consider this: As a Freshman at a different school Split-Log went 17-1-2 had 14 shutouts, allowed 9 goals, made 64 saves and her shots to goals ratio was .123 , and lost in the quarterfinals to eventual champs Ben Franklin. This year her goals to shots ratio is .087. That is what happens when you pad stats apparently. I'm sure the above mentioned Keepers will certainly have stats that look much better then hers.

I think this discussion is crazy. From what I have seen with keepers around Baton Rouge, not many more of them would have the stats Valerie has in that same situation. The keepers with strong teams in front of them aren't going to get tested, so they aren't going to have those stats. I would like to see some of the keepers that have been mentioned earlier in this topic play in goal for Woodlawn in a game against BRHS or SJA or St. Amant. Would they show up as well as Val? Who knows, because they are on more talented teams that don't have to rely on an outstanding keeper to keep them close in some games. Not knocking anyone out there, but Val is in my opinion the better keeper in that district right now. Amy and Julie are both good keepers, don't get me wrong, but they really aren't tested much. So how can we give them this title? Put them to the test, see how they stand up to tougher competition. Maybe we should have this discussion again after the playoffs. BRHS will meet tougher competition later in the playoffs (so will SJA and St. Amant), so let's wait till then to decide who the best keeper is.

Not too often I agree with goahsrams but there is a first for everything .... Debra Hill from Acadiana is the best goalie I have seen this year and she is only a sophomore. Great field presence and moves in the box better than most.

I for one would like to see the discussion move towards other keepers. What about Fontainebleau? Mandeville? SSA? EA, Vandebilt, St. Thomas Moore, etc. All these ranked teams must have decent goalies as it is very hard to be competitive if you are just pulling a field player to fill the space. I've heard about McKinley's but don't remember reading anything about Parkview's volleyball girl who I thought was very tough. Lets get off of one district and one player and get some new input.
