Game of the year in D-5. The above quotes say it all, but I will say this. Line score -- Leah Aultman (1) in the 82nd minute. This team has struggled this year. They have struggled to find and to trust each other. The turning point came two weeks ago against Barbe. There was a little hint of trust -- a little bit of belief, and like a cascading waterfall, it seemed to grow. SJA went 0-3 in Tomball, Texas, and when it was all said and done, was 9,000% a better team as a result. As to tonight's game against Henderson, Cancienne, Carter, Kennedy, & Co., -- what a battle. I would put 1st half possessions at 54-45 for BRHS. 2nd half was 70-30 for SJA. TREMENDOUS DEFENSE -- BOTH SIDES both teams -- all game long. SJA seemed to work its wings a bit better and had a few more opps. Much of this is from The Advocate newspaper account -- In order to combat BRHS' outstanding midfield play, Coach Winchell employed a 4-5-1. In about the 64th minute, Leah Aultman sent a cross into the box, and forward Maggie Eggers almost got to it. In about the 78th minute, Kaitlin Hatcher split two BRHS defenders off a throw-in, and was just wide from the 6. With SJA's 1st OT possession in the 82nd minute, it was either Maggie Eggers, Paige Menier, or Kaitlin Hatcher who switched the field, and sent a through ball to Leah Aultman on the right wing. Leah faked out two defenders, and sent a rocket which caromed off the goalie's hands into the net. Game. Set. Match. I want to single out a few. Stellar Defensive Effort to Megan Aultman, Ashley Brunet, and Ellen Cleland. Aultman and Brunet should garner all district and all state honors for their play all year, as well as for this game. Cleland has exhibited the kind of senior leadership that is needed for championship play. But the game was won in the midfield with five (5) others. GAMES OF THEIR CAREERS ( and I might add GAME BALLS) to LAUREN FREAKIN' HURDLE, KAITLIN VB HATCHER, and PAIGE THE VACUUM MENIER!! Nothing -- and I mean NOTHING was allowed to develop on the interior. BRHS did get a nice run up the right sideline by Reily Kennedy in the 71st minute, but that was their best opportunity. SJA's weakness has always been interior defense from the 18. The midfield really stepped up against Henderson, Cancienne, and Carter, and exhibited the kind of fortitude that championship play demands. Oh and by the way, Jessica Fenner just happened to play the absolute unmitigated best game of her life on the left wing. Not that I was noticing. Serious kudos also to Grace Gremillion who dogged Stephanie Henderson all night, and greatly contributed to SJA's midfield control. Don't want to slight anyone with a lack of mention. It was a true team effort!! In any event -- CONGRATS SJA -- DISTRICT 5 CHAMPS -- WHAT A GAME!!!!! In conclusion and on a personal note, on behalf of myself, my former Assistant Coach Glen Eggers, and SJA players Jessica Fenner, Maggie Eggers, and Kaitlin Hatcher, we salute three of our former players/teammates, who have developed into outstanding players for Baton Rouge High -- No. 14 (MF) -- Reily Kennedy No. 4 (MF) -- Hisa Turner, and Danielle Davis. All are outstanding players, and I am gratified they have received instruction from people who know what they're doing. I cheered a bunch for those players tonight, only to receive a few glares from a few SJA parents. No matter. A magnificent evening!! Regards -- SJA Dad

SJA 4 Woodlawn 0
Score at half 1-0
I have to first commend SJA for an excellent season. Next I need to commend Woodlawn. Those girls really stepped up tonight and threw everything they had on the field. Woodlawn has 13 players in total (1 junior, 8 sophomores, and 4 freshmen) and I think they just ran out of gas towards the end but I couldn't be more proud of them. The goalie Morgan Boone played the game of her life and made some tremendous saves. I think that with experience Woodlawn may be a force to reckon with in years to come.
BUT right now SJA IS a force to be reckoned with, so good luck in the playoffs. And SJA dad don't know if you were there but I would love to hear your opinion of how both teams played.

Outstanding game account. I am very gratified that others are stepping up to comment about District 5 play. Before I get to your question, official line score is as follows --
Leah Aultman in the 17th minute Paige Menier in the 56th minute Jaime Schutte in the 67th minute Megan Aultman in the 73rd minute.
Even though field conditions were atrocious, Woodlawn was indeed outstanding. They are very young, and seem to have some highly skilled young players. I do not know their coach, but I was very impressed after the game -- walking off the field -- hearing a bit of her positive reinforcement of how they played, and what they can do to get better. She had the riveted attention of her players, and they will be a force to be reckoned with. Since they are the 3rd place team in our district, they are playoff bound -- and so best of luck to them.
I can't add much more in terms of season ending observations about SJA other than what has been posted previously, but the time is now to make this year's experience mesh into a cohesive inspiration to move forward, succeed, and hopefully go deep into the playoffs. I would not have dreamed of suggesting that about this team a month ago. They are not the biggest. Nor the fastest. Nor the most skilled. But they seem to be ONE right now -- and that will take them as far as they dare to dream. I have a funny feeling about this team's chances.
A final word about SJA's seniors -- Morgan Broussard, Ellen Cleland, and Lauren Hurdle. Scholastic privacy laws normally prohibit me from saying this, but not a one of them has a GPA of less than 3.8. That -- coupled with outstanding leadership -- especially these last two weeks -- has morphed into the kinds of examples of outstanding young people that we all wish our children could emulate. They are truly special, and deserve their mantle as team leaders.
A final thanks to Coach Craig, who has endured much. We hope his season continues in a positive manner. He has earned his paycheck with this bunch -- LOL!!
Of course -- the regular season is not yet complete. A very tough Acadiana team awaits tomorrow night -- and let's hope that playing in tonight's muddy quagmire does not rob SJA of their legs for that game. Then I believe we end against Coach Goodall's very impressive young East Ascension squad.
Geaux Red Dawgs!!!

EA had to cancel Monday night's game with SJA, in order to make up a district game with St. Amant. And so SJA has concluded its regular season, and awaits word probably on Tuesday which wild card it will meet in the 1st round. We're assuming it will be Captain Shreve, Northshore, or Ponchatoula. The other wild card goes to Dutchtown to play the Griffins. Btw -- what precisely is a griffin?

Division play ended today with the BRHS and Woodlawn game. Woodlawn played with some serious heart this evening. Woodlawn had three starters out with flu and played with just ten. They focused on defense and shutting Stephanie Henderson down. They held the game scoreless for roughly around twenty minutes. The second goal came on a own goal. last goal of first half on header.
Score at half 3-0
Woodlawn goalkeeper had almost twenty saves in game but BRHS was helping her a little bit with some shanks and post hits.
Girls held BRHS off until the end when fatigue took over (played with nine at times to give girls brief breaks). BRHS is a great team and will do well in the playoffs. Woodlawn is heading to Shreveport to take on Caddo Magnet.
Final score 5-0

District 5 Playoff Pairings -- In the upper half, SJA will host Captain Shreve -- probably on Wednesday night, but awaiting word from Coach Craig. If SJA can get by Captain Shreve, they would play the winner of Bonnabel and Chapelle. In the lower half, Woodlawn travels to face Dist 1's 2nd place team in Caddo. If they win that, they would face the winner of Barbe and West Monroe. BR High travels to face Dist 9's 2nd place team in John Ehret. If they win that, they get the winner of the best and potentially most competitive 1st round match, where Mt. Carmel will host Mandeville. Coingrats and best of luck to all of District 5!!

With all of the recent rains (including that forecast fro Tuesday evening, what kind of conditions should we expect to see the Burbank fields in? Will this favor a team that kicks over the top and runs on to balls or will the game be able to be played on the ground with an attack that builds from the back? Or will it come down to set pieces?

Knock on wood, but I don't think field conditions will be problematic at Burbank -- at least tomorrow night for the SJA-Cap'n Shreve match[/i]. We did have a ton of rain last Friday and Saturday. However, the Baton Rouge Middle School Soccer League chose not to play on Sunday so as to preserve the fields. Sunday was beautiful, and the fields should have dried up substantially. Monday brought no rain. The front that moved through BR today brought a little, but not much. Tomorrow -- Wednesday -- will be a gorgeous day -- sunny and very windy, so the Burbank fields should dry out even more. The game Wednesday evening should be played on a nice pitch with some sog, but I will be very surprised if there are any puddles.
Now the world will end on Thursday, so all bets are off after that.
