SJA 3 Captain Shreve 2 -- Goals by Jessica Fenner (2) [in the 43rd and 68th minutes] and Leah Aultman [in the 52nd minute]. Captain Shreve goals I believe both by their 5'10" forward No. 21 in the 69th and 78th minutes. SJA possession 75-25. Gimme a few -- I will post a detailed game report both here as an edit and in the D-5 thread.
Okay -- first -- hats off to Shreve. Their game is defend, counter-attack, and send long balls to No. 21 -- who is a terrific player [ShreveDad -- help me -- did you say her name is Abby?]. Unfortunately -- and I'm being objective here -- they didn't seem to find their groove offensively until the last 10 minutes -- although they did have a terrific opportunity in the 59th minute with a through ball to one of their forwards, who got by our sweeper, and got off their first quality shot.
But SJA really controlled this game. I would put possession at 75-25. SJA out shot Shreve probably 18-4. Jessica Fenner clanged two off the cross bar in the first 15 minutes. Kaitlin Hatcher launched two point blank shots over the goal.
SJA won this game with their midfield play. Whereas Shreve is a counter-attack team, SJA played some very nice ground ball possession tonight. Leah Aultman (No. 2) and Jessica Fenner (No. 7) really controlled play on the wings -- supported by Megan Aultman, Ashley Brunet, and Ellen Cleland on the back line. There was a lot of beautiful pass and flow -- we just couldn't finish.
Halftime score -- 0-0.
3 minutes into the 2nd half, Grace Gremillion sent a ball into the box to Maggie Eggers, who was taken down. Jessica Fenner converted the pk in the 43rd minute.
In 52nd minute, freshman Leah Aultman scored the goal of her young career by trapping a goal kick at the 35, juking out a couple, taking her time in maneuvering just outside the box, and then launching a rocket from about 28. Nothing but net.
In the 69th minute, Leah sent a cross into the box. Jessica Fenner gathered at the 6, and sent it home. 3-0 -- and Rosanne Barr started warming up, although Shreve did make it interesting late.
All told -- a solid effort by both teams. A good night at the Bank.

Thanks SJAdad. Of note: #1 Keeper sick with flu/pneumonia. Sophomore Keeper in goal. Solid performance.
After SJA up 3-0, Capt. Shreve caught SJA celebrating on ensuing kickoff, able to send a ball to a streaking player on right wing for a quick score.
Final Shreve goal in last minute of game (game already decided), and maybe appeared off sides.....?
Game not as close as score makes it seem. SOG ratio 10-1 in favor of SJA. Finishing a problem for SJA on this cold, windy night.

Wonder if SJA Dad will keep doing posts about politely assuming the team is through to the next round? Wonder how many girls/coaches that must annoy? Good job! the word "vicarious" comes to mind.

Perhaps you need to re-visit that post. In no way, shape, or form, did I intimate that SJA was a shoo-in for advancing past Shreve. That post indisputably says that although we knew we were in for a dog fight, in the event we did advance, we needed contact info asap due to next week's schedule in New Orleans [both of our prospective 2nd round opponents are in the NO area]. As it turns out, Chapelle won. We play at Chapelle next week in the middle of Mardi Gras in New Orleans during a very narrow window of opportunity. The SJA and Chapelle coaches [the SJA coach also tried to contact the Bonnabel coach -- to no avail] contacted one another, and agreed that if they were fortunate enough to prevail tonight, they would play on Monday. Had Shreve won tonight -- necessitating a 2nd round match in S'Port -- then there would have been no problems with next week. For the life of me, this one has me Being a lawyer, vicarious liability comes to mind -- imputing the liability of one to another. But your use of the word in this context truly is And so if I genuinely offended anyone from Shreve -- then I sincerely apologize if I created the impression that I was scheduling past past you. That never was my intent, and Shreve proved itself a worthy adversary tonight. That post was all about planning.

ok -- SJA @ Chapelle @ 3:00 tomorrow. Does anyone know when BRHS hooks up with Mt. Carmel? If it does not conflict with our game -- that will be one worth watching. In fact, that game, plus Fontainebleau-Dominican -- are probably the marquee match-ups in the 2nd round.
Let' hope we can get by Chapelle tomorrow. They come from the very tough NO area district with Mt. Carmel and Dominican. A review of their season shows they were very competitive in those games. Don't know much else about them, but I imagine we can expect a very physical match. It will be very closely contested. Hope our team wide flu epidemic has run its course. Jessica was really bad off yesterday, but seems to be a little better today. Geaux Red Dawgs!!
Best of luck to the BRHS Bulldogs against Mt. Carmel.

Why do all the parents say Red Dawgs for St. Joes but every news article and official thing says Redstickers?

Redstickers might be the quasi-official name, but some sports at SJA have adopted a different one. It's kind of like the Auburn Tigers -- but no one from Auburn really calls themselves that. They're either the War Eagles or the Plainsmen, or whatever. SJA's soccer team adopted Red Dawgs a few years back. I think the swimmers call themselves something different. Not sure what the volleyballers do.

Game 2 B played at Joe Yenni Stadium at East Jefferson High School -- I-10 to Clearview Parkway. Exit right [south]. Stay on Clearview. You will approach Airline. A few blocks before Airline, take any side street to the right -- Camel being one. You'll run right into the stadium and/or school. Game Time 3:00 p.m. in order to be finished before parade traffic builds too much. As an aside, one exit might be the Earhardt Expressway back toward Power Blvd -- just depends on how traffic is building up.
If anyone knows whether Fontainebleau-Dominican or BRHS-Mt. Carmel is going to be played tonight, please post. I suppose tomorrow nght is a possibility for those games as well.

SJA 1 Chapelle 0. Goal by Leah Aultman in 77th minute off the assist from Grace Gremillion. The winning combination started with a through ball from Maggie Eggers to Gremillion, who found space to her left, and fed a wide open Aultman at about the 30. The Chapelle goalie for some reason was out -- I'm not sure if she thought that Aultman would try and drive -- and therefore needed to attack to cut down on the angle, but Aultman's resulting soft floater over the goalie was beautifully placed for the game winner. Ironically, in the 71st minute, Aultman just missed the exact same shot off a pass from Jessica Fenner that barely floated over the cross bar. In that situation, the goalie was again extended into the mid part of the box.
No one told SJA that Joe Yenni field is comprised of Putt-Putt green carpet. The hard, smooth surface, coupled with a steady 20 mph wind at their back in the 1st half seemed to stymie SJA, who clearly was unaccustomed to how rapidly the ball moved on the ground. There was a lot of hesitation and flat-footedness, and suffice it to say that SJA's coach was not happy. Even with that, SJA controlled possession no less than 95% of the time in the 1st half. Chapelle only advanced past midfield on three occasions. The wind certainly played a major role in that.
SJA adjusted in the 2nd half, and began finding their touches on the surface. Going against the wind helped tremendously. Chapelle used the wind in the 2nd half to make a few forays into the upper third, but 2nd half possession was still 65-35 for SJA.
Chapelle actually had the first chance in the 58th minute. A nice corner found someone's head, but it was blocked. Chapelle had three more corners, but nothing much happened with them.
I am going to be very careful in what I write next. I read with a great deal of interest the dueling posts concerning the officiating in last week's Mt. Carmel-Mandeville match. Let's just say that I found myself recalling that thread an awful lot tonight. I simply do not understand how if a forward and a defender are running in space -- side by side -- with the forward in control of the ball -- and yes arms will inevitably flail from both players -- how the forward can be called for a foul right before she shoots -- and it happens three (3) times[/i]. This forward in fact got called for eight (8) fouls total, and I'll be the first to declare that a couple of them were deserved. But this is big girl soccer. I'm sure Chapelle has seen its share of physical play coming from a league with Mt. Carmel and Dominican.
And that's all I have to say about that.

Trying to upload a photo of the game winning goal, but the site won't allow it. What will work is if you copy the below link and paste it into your browser search portal. Here's a link to photo of the ball headed into the net off the game winning shot from Leah Aultman. To SJADAD: First, congratulations on advancing to the quarterfinals. I feel a need to reply to your game analysis because it was an extremely ARROGANT comment to say that this was "the most lopsided 1-0 win". Yes, you did dominate and have more possession, but that possession did not lead to any quality shots, except for 1. the game winner,2. the other one you spoke, which sailed over the FOOTBALL field goal post, and 3. one-on-one in the first half. Other than that, our Chapelle goalie was pretty comfortable, as she did not make one dive, and catching rolling balls. Chapelle had some quality chances with the corner kicks and free kicks, especially the header that was cleared off your goal line. So if you think shooting from 40 yards should be considered a quality shot, it should be close to being on frame. So, lopsided, give me a break.
Now, as for your comments about the fields. Are you serious? Putt-putt carpet? It's not carpet, its turf, and if you would have kicked the ball on that field you would realize that it actually is slower than on normal grass. I'm so sorry to hear your coach was unhappy the first half, but I'm pretty sure he was upset that your girls couldn't pass, because that is really sad to blame it on a perfect stadium field. Please, everyone else who plays St Joes call the coach and let him know the type of grass, so he can make a solid game plan. By the way, if you happen to get to the finals, Independence Stadium is the same type of field, so pass that onto your coach, so he won't be so upset. Your girls had an hour to warm up and figure it out, and Chapelle had only played on it one other time this year, so find a better excuse to why you aren't as good as you think.
Oh wait, you did. THE REFS...how could I forget. Your forward was called for the same foul because the ref was VERY consistent, because she kept hooking and pushing off (which he stopped and explained to her). He also gave your girls at least 2 free kicks that second half. Your girls had to resort to trash talking, calling our player a "midget." Well, our 2 (an 8th and 9th grader) shut your girls down for the most part, and your girls simply got frustrated and continued to push off...it happens, get over it. The ref did not make any game deciding calls. You guys played a physical game, and you worked hard for the win. Too many people thought this would be an easy game, and you can't admit that it wasn't. Can't wait to hear how much you complain when you don't get the win. Be happy that your girls played hard and found a way to win.

to Chapelle's vitriolic reply. Don't forget to hit "smite" on my karma. It seems to be chique these days. Kudos to Chapelle for a very well organized defensive game plan. Upon reviewing the game film, final match statistics -- Shots on Goal -- SJA 9 Chapelle 3 Saves -- Chapelle 4 SJA 0 As to the turf, I didn't blame it for our poor play. We simply did not adjust to the surface at all in the first half -- particularly with the 20 mph wind at our back. Chapelle had the same problem in the 2nd half. It was the same field for both teams. And I agree with you that perhaps our girls should have tested it more thoroughly in pre-game warmups. Oh and with two posts -- welcome to the Board!!

Speaking for myself as SJA coach, I am very proud of my girls and want to congratulate Chapelle for a very hard fought game. Personally I loved the field and wish I could have played on it in my younger days. Looking forward to the next round to prove that we are not a "David".

Fully defer to Coach Craig's comments about the field, and apologize for any erroneous descriptions about it. I did have some very traumatic experiences on evil, torture-filled Putt-Putt courses -- especially the one that used to be on Veterans Blvd in Metairie. Watching the "Saw" movies recently made me remember them. I've had many, many therapy sessions, and sometimes those old demons still rear their ugly heads. Kudos also to Chapelle for a terrific game.

Aahhh -- vicarious as in extending my experiences as a fan through to the players' playing the game -- ok, swampmeister -- gotcha -- now I understand -- very poignant observation -- and kudos to your point. And although I acknowledge the point's validity -- if you knew me as a coach [certainly not at the high school level], you'd know that my "vicarious" enthusiasm has less to do with wishing I were playing [trust me -- this 210 pound body that feels as if it walked with the ancient Mayans] and more to do with pure enjoyment in cheering for a group of girls that have accomplished more than many would have given them a chance. Go EA, pal.
