If you look at the 2020-2021 rule book for MLS NEXT, like several on this board have, it seems pretty clear that no outside soccer is allowed, except for the rare waiver. Then we started talking about the MLS NEXT winter break and I think TDP assumed the break would allow people to play high school. Now the national organization is like “hold up” Is there any official stance from national org?

soccerbr it in dropped in the forum. I assume that this is from TDP to parents: "The MLS NEXT commissioner reiterated that full-time players are not allowed to participate for their high school teams during the high school season. We are in discussions with MLS NEXT to provide players with as many soccer opportunities and experiences as possible."

So under this reasoning coaches should stop letting football players finish their season and then join their soccer team? I didn't say what coaches "should" do. I just said that it should be their decision (or, more realistically, the decision of the principal/administration, since they can hire & fire the coach). Personally, if I were a HS coach and had a really great soccer player at my school and he was only available for December and January, I'd take him for December and January. But some coaches might feel differently.

Participating families were told LATE this week that as per MLSNext rules, full time TDP players would NOT be able to play HS soccer. They were also told that if this changed their desire to participate in the TDP that refunds would be made.
TDP=NO HS SOCCER.
Still kind of amazed that for all the debate and teeth gnashing that has gone on about the virtues of MLSNext and how its the best thing, and how you cant advance your career or train with the best in HS, we still have some of the same people wanting to play HS. SMDH
Look, just pick one and stay with it and stop all this waffling. If you are on here touting MLSNext, then that should be your path and you should live with it
On an entirely different note, though, it seems pretty screwed up that TDP coaches can go back to coaching their HS teams, but the athletes cant go back. And just how is that going to work during the overlap of seasons? 4 nights a week of training, most of it in Baton Rouge, and weekend travel all of which will be taking place from the start of the HS season (Oct 25) till roughly Dec 14. Coaches involved in both are going to find their time spread pretty thin. Logistically its going to be difficult if not almost impossible to do both. Which group will have to pay the price for a coach "not at their best"? Or will there be a reliance on assistant coaches (some of them HS coaches as well), and is that what you are paying for as a participant in either? Finally, when exactly will TDP start back up in the spring? It has been indicated that it will be in late February, but is that for the return to game play or the resumption of training?

So how many have changed their mind on LA TDP Elite now that the story has changed on high school?

Also, so do part time la TDP elite not get to play HS either? PT players are allowed to play HS, but not participate in days that HS practices/plays games. That’s not the LHSAA rule. They have to be done with MLS before being rostered and can’t go back until done with high school. There is no EXCEPTION for MLS Next. The exception is for ODP, Official College Showcase Tournament and the rare case a team has USYS National League or Regional (MidSouth League) hames. part time players would have to go the “loophole” method discussed earlier. The training on non school days thing is for when the exception (training for USYS National League or College Showcase) is used.

My understanding is that the PT players aren’t “rostered” unless needed for specific games/tournaments due to players unable to travel/injury. If they aren’t rostered with MLS Next, why wouldn’t they be allowed to play HS? Again, just my understanding from information received.

You are correct Wildcat. I don’t think they are rostered unless needed. Technically a kid could participate as a part time player not playing in more than 12 games , then go play high school once their season starts. Once done with the high school season, they could be transferred to a full time player for TDP.

Quick search and it is easy to determine that at minimum a full-time mls next players will not be playing HS or Middle school soccer. MLS Next and LHSAA rules are easily accessible online. bsbproduction.s3.amazonaws.com/portals/116/docs/mls%20next%20rules%20and%20regulations%202020-2021%20-%20final%20-%209.8.20.pdf c. Player Participation in Middle and High School Soccer Club Players must agree to forgo participating simultaneously in both (1) MLS NEXT and (2) high school or middle school soccer. Except as set forth herein, players who participate in high/middle school soccer are ineligible to participate in MLS NEXT Events. Only players who have been granted a waiver by PDev will be allowed to remain on their Club’s Roster during the high school soccer season (waivers are not available for middle school). This waiver must be granted by PDev before September 12, 2020, to be considered for the Roster exemption for the 2020-2021 MLS NEXT Season. The waiver eligibility guidelines are as follows and further information may be found in the MLS NEXT High School Waiver: 15 i. The Player received or will receive financial aid dependent on high school soccer participation. ii. The Player has been accepted into a private high school based on soccer participation. Although Clubs are not limited to a specific number of waivers, the number is naturally self-limiting to field a full Team throughout the MLS NEXT Season. Full-time Players registered with a Club who do not meet waiver eligibility and choose to play with their high school team will not be allowed to re-enter the Program during the same MLS NEXT Season after participating in the high school season with their current or a different Club.

We’ve all agreed that yes that is the full time player rules. The part time player status is what allows a little wiggle room for those players wishing to do both.

However, the season is 10 months beginning sometime in August and ending in June. Louisiana TDP Elite will look to be as accommodating to players as possible with Louisiana TDP Elite being the priority. LATDP Elite girls will be able to fully participate on their high school teams. okay now I see why so much confusion and conversation. Appears LATDP must have received an interpretation or update of rules from MLS Next. Appears they will be eligible to play after all.

Again, could be wrong.

The rules for MLS Next have not changed since it’s inception in 2020. I assume MLS Next had a rigorous vetting process in order to allow LATDP into the league. I would assume that topic was addressed and answered during that vetting period.
Lafayette Dynamo, BRSC, LaFire all have full-time staff which know and understand that question is going to be raised, I assume that is why it is addressed and answered under FAQ. Why would they knowingly make that statement under FAQ if it is not accurate?
I’m confused why this is even an issue where an interpretation of LHSAA rules is necessary. The collaboration of clubs and those in charge should already know the answer based on the rules set forth by MLS Next. Pretty big task and accomplishment and one I’m sure required a high degree of knowledge and professionalism. Hence leads me to believe they know the rules and would not make a preemptive statement without it being accurate.
Whether by choice or accident, if that statement is inaccurate, then it would be a huge red flag for me.
As far as HS soccer is concerned, if LATDP players cannot participate in HS then it’s not a big deal. It would only potentially affect 88 players spread out over three Metropolitans in Louisiana. That has to be less than 1% of the total players participating in HS soccer.
