One of the best Keepers in the state right now is Pineville's Jonathan Reed.

I think Reed is a good athlete. He's aggressive to come out of the box and he does really well on crosses and almost everything in the air, he is quite huge. Yet to see how he is covering the low balls I could make a better decision then. Also I don't know if he communicates very well and directs the team like most good keepers do.

Andre something from Br. Martin... I think he is a junior
Also Andrew Mullins from Jesuit is the real deal... he had two incredible saves against St. Paul's that showed his instinctiveness and talent
Maybe not the best in state, but these guys are definitely pretty high up on the list

Are these just good athletes who happen to play in the goal for their teams or are you talking about trained goalkeepers, that play the same position for their club teams? There is a huge difference. The best position themselves to make the difficult shots look to be easy saves, and the impossible to stop by ordinary keepers are turned into difficult saves.

I don't think he did much to be honest. I know this because ASH had 31 shots and only 5 or 6 on target so there wasn't much there for him to do well. Like I said, he comes out well for balls and is so athletic and big that he covers his area well. Pumas I agree, good keepers make everything look simple and I've always been coached that footwork is key, why dive when you can take short steps and save it easier.

Upon reflection, I guess in the end the results are what count. Coaches don't really care as long as someone doesn't have to fish the ball outof the back of their own net. I was just curious as to what criteria was being used to measure who was good. On the girls boards the only criteria is putting up your own school's keeper, it has nothing to do with skill.

It is sometimes difficult to rate a keeper in high school soccer. A bad defense can make a keeper look bad because he has to field so many shots and the law of averages is that some will go in the net. and we tend to rate a keeper by goals allowed in the net. Also a good defense can make a keeper look good. A shut out makes a keeper look good when sometimes, he hasn't seen any action or had to make any saves....But then a bad defense can give a keeper an opportunity to show how good he is because he makes a huge amount of saves, because nobody got to the ball before it came to him...like the keeper from Barbe (I think) last year. If the keeper knows where to position himself in the goal and in the box for different shots and he can position the rest of the defense accordingly he can make the saves look easy. A good defense is a keeper's best friend. I've seen defenses not follow through because they thought their keeper was so good that he could handle anything...and sometimes no one is that good. That said, I don't know who the best keeper I have seen this year is...I'm still checking them out, but enjoy it when you give me names to watch for.

To add to what to you said; one of the main jobs of a goalkeeper is to organize the defense, and in some cases, the attack. A good keeper might not get any shots taken on him in a game because he organized and kept the defense of their toes. Communicator & Distributor > Shotstopper.

ontherun24 No that is not the same keeper we had during the sulphur tournament we had to move a lot of people around because one of our star forwards got hurt. And He was playing forward in place for him so we ended up with a freshman in the goal.

I agree with Ghandi. Organization is key but it doesn't seem to happen very often as most keepers in this state don't get good training. They just stick somebody in goal who builds on experience and a lot of the technically sound keepers still lack the ability to organize their team and start an attack or prevent an attack, leaving defenders to fend for themselves and if they aren't knowledgable this can be crucial

that said the keeper must keep a cool head at all times and know not to assault the referee's verbally getting themselves red cards hehe, just a little humor for you ghandi

i can't remember their names, but in Div. I dist. 3 the best 2 keepers play for acadiana and carencro. I won't say my goalkeeper is the best only because he plays on my team, and I'm bias. but if those two teams didn't have those guys in goal, they would have lost by much more to laffy.
